Comments:
Best conditions in many years! Exciting to have 10m and 15m open. I felt like a
kid in a candy store, wondering where the bands may open to, and what goodies
they might provide. EU on 15m? JA’s on 10m?
Here’s a band-by-band breakdown:
160m
No Europe, but did work a number of JA’s. Band never sounded very active and
some of that was neglect on my part. 40m and 80m were just too good. However,
the lack of expeditions and EU propagation was noticeable.
80m
Band opened to EU with a combination of direct and skew path pointing 90
degrees. Second night was much better featuring a direct path. Tried running and
picked up a few stations, but S&P was more productive. Both nights were
excellent to Asia providing the bulk of my QSOs.
This is one band where you really notice the power of CQ WW to get guys on the
air!
40m
For the first time in many years, 40m stayed strong all night as I suspect the
MUF stayed above 7 MHz. This band usually determines how much sleep I'll get. If
the band is good all night, no sleep for Mitch. If it isn’t good, Mitch gets
to sleep.
EU Friday night wasn’t great. Signals were weaker and many had that familiar
hollow, ringing sound. Had better success working them skew path beaming about
90 degrees. The second night was much improved, including the daylight hours.
Started working guys at 1:30 PM local on Sunday. By the afternoon, stations were
runnable. Fun.
Asia and VK/ZL were excellent both nights.
20m
Didn’t notice much difference versus previous years. Thought Europe might stay
open longer, but that didn’t really happen.
Saturday morning’s EU run was a zoo. There was a slight ringing sound on the
signals, making getting through the pile up a challenge. Sunday was even worse.
A heavy ringing sound/echo the first hour on all signals was insane. Thought I
was hearing signals both short and long path, or maybe short and skew path. Not
sure, but it was a nasty pile up to process that first hour. After that it
improved and all was well. Interesting.
15m
Welcome back 15m! Nice to see the band open. Both mornings featured EU, but
Sunday was better. All of it was worked skew path towards South America, beaming
about 120 degrees. Not a peep direct path.
Both Asia and VK/ZL were excellent both days. So fun to hear our friends across
the Pacific again!
10m
Before the contest, I was on the phone with Danny, K7SS. We were looking at
signals on 10m trying to figure out if the band was going to open to Asia. I
heard a few JA’s calling CQ, but not a lot of activity.
Once the bell hit 00:00z, I called CQ and had a small JA run.
Exciting to have 10m in play. The South America and Caribbean guys were loud all
weekend. Worked a G0 Sunday morning while trying to run pointing 110 degrees.
Not sure if someone was pulling my leg, or if the band was open, but he was the
only EU worked, if it’s legit.
As usual, I get so run focused my mult count suffers, but that’s okay. It was
thrilling to have the high bands open again. Really fun! Feels good to put
actual numbers on the scoreboard for 10m.
Thanks to all for the Qs. Stay well!
73, Mitch, K7RL
