Comments:
TOTAL QSO TOTAL = 5,146 highest score since 2014 effort to reclaim record.
In a nutshell.. a great effort by a great team. being the dx in CQP is fun..
being part of essentially a DX-pedition team experience is even more fun, and
operating N6O during CQP is about as close as you can get in the golden state.
huge pile ups, worldwide callers, operators on simultaneous band modes all add
to the experience. As usual our top operators present, as well as newer
operators mastering how to make ludicrous amounts of QSO's.
Planning was done over zoom. prep by N6WM Thurs/Friday onsite Catering by N6WM
and KK6PXT with fresh fruit, Sandwitches and Crudité (hi hi) veg platters and
bagels.
here is how it went down.
10M - WD6T 10m Capt. KK6PXT op CW and Phone.
Dave was psyched out over the possibility 10 would be dead. The team schedulers
disagreed, and felt the need for a top op to captain the band. with over 1100
qsos in log on 10, hope we can put that debate to rest. Phone was where the
money is.. WD6T really shined, and did fb going so far as conjuring qsos.. in
his words "Most effective SSB strategy at the end was to have a CQ that
announced “California QSO party…or just call if you'd like a signal
report.” Vast majority of late Sunday Qs were single digits or #1." id
say it worked.
15M N6WM Captain, with op time from KK6PXT and a bit from RO.
We may have done a bit better by splitting this band with dedicated SSB and CW
stations, but not this year. WM handled both modes through the majority of the
contest, with op backup from KK6PXT and N6RO at the end of the contest. 15 was
the DX band, 23 DL 1G 5 I and 9 JA all answering cq. RBN showed solid and
continuous opening to EU through the test and often skip was better to EU then
US.
20M Phone (dedicated): K3EST Captain with assist from KK6PXT. Bob did his usual
admirable BIC performance.. logging nearly 1700 qsos on 20.. Bob said band was
good and open till 10pm Multiple stations worked on every section. VE8ER and
VY1CO in NT.
20 CW(Dedicated) K6AW captain, N6RO on assist.
Steve was originally scheduled to be on site, but ended up remoting in for the
contest, racking up big totals on 20 cw. we were sad he could not be onsite,
but glad we have the remote option! Steve was a great shack citizen powering
down as needed to minimize qrn.
40 phone (Dedicated) WX5S Captain
Matt also brought his expert SSB game to the station via remote, driving the RO
double stack and working over 570 qsos. Normally we have a dedicated op during
the day, but alas KI6JNW was unable to join this year, so Matt did what he could
carying the entire load.
40 CW (Dedicated) WA6O Captain, backup from N6RO, WD6T
Mike is a 40 cw surgeon. once he gets going, band opens up he is off to the
races untill the band closes. Mike did a stellar job, and was a good shack
izen, powering down and moving when QRN was bad.
80 Phone (dedicated) W6DMW captain. Dave W. did a great Job holding the 80m
sideband fort as the lead op for the band, producing some of the highest totals
on phone in recent memory. Dave reports and 80/20 Run s&p ration, and
enjoyed being on phone talking to various california stations out there. 80
dipole at 160 ft added to abilities this go round.
80 CW (dedicated) K6AW captain. assist from N6RO.
What to do after working 20cw all day.. of course, fire up on 80 cw and run run
run. Steve did a fine job until we had some computer/n1mm glitches..they were
subsequently corrected then Ken took over. Steve had a long day.
160 CW/Phone N6RO captain, N6WM assist
N6WM started off on the 160 4 square, mostly picking up cw qsos but managed some
fone as well, once Kens 160 station was available, he took over woking quite a
few additional.
radio equipment behaved well, some minor internet glitches, and IT issues, but
overall a smooth ride. 16 6 banders! (see stats below)
Our thanks to all CQP participants for your qsos, congrats and high fives to the
expeditioneers, and thanks to the organizers for a fine job.
73 and seeya next time
for Ken N6RO and the N6O contest team
