How about when used in "buck mode" ?
I have a xfmr that will put out 7500VDC @ 2.5A CCS  in a FW Bridge and I
only want 6000VDC @ 2A .
The Variac is a motor driven dual monster rated at 30A each....too heavy
to lift. The filter cap is a 50MF 9KV oil filled. 
It has been several years since I used this supply to test a tube with
handles but the Variac was used to slowly bring the DC up to ratings; I
never ran it overvoltage and the regulation was good...from memory.
