It all depends on the socket used Jon....

Ancient backwater types with the old SK-500 socket will benefit. The
newer SK-510 does not need that step. In ALL sockets it is imperative
that you use the tube clips at all 4 corners to ground the tube
shell.......many builders do not realize that is a very important step.. 
The Italian Donato socket is also excellent if you can find one....out of
production.
