They get noisier as they get older, especially if they have ball races
rather than plain bearings. I scrounged a nice blower - more than enough
air flow to give 0.6 inches water gauge on a 4CX 1000 - but oh! so noisy.
The ball races were shot, and so I turned up some phosphor bronze plain
bearings for it. It's very quiet now. Incidentally, surprising how much
swarf you can produce with a lathe and some 1 inch diameter steel
bar........On noise, the same thing applies with muffin fans.
