I have been waiting for a technical response to your question, as I am =
also left bewildered regarding the present value of swinging chokes. =20

Although it would be possible to "tune" a swinging choke, the resonant =
frequency would change as the current changes (because the inductance =
changes).  The results would be very interesting to say the least. =20

My 1942 Editors and Engineers Handbook describes a swinging choke as:

"In certain radio circuits the power drawn by a vacuum tube amplifier =
can vary widely.  Class B audio amplifiers are good examples of this =
type of amplifier.  The plate current drawn by a class B audio amplifier =
can vary 1000 percent or more.  It is desirable to keep the d.c. output =
voltage applied to the plate of the amplifier as constant as possible, =
and the voltage should be independent of the current drawy from the =
power supply.  The output voltage from a given power supply is always =
higher with a condenser input filter than with a choke type input =
filter.  When the input choke is of the swinging variety, it means that =
the inductance of the choke varies widely with the load current drawn =
from the power supply..."

Unlike the smoothing choke, the swinging choke does not have an air gap =
in the core.  Resistance is less because it does not need as much wire =
for initial inductance (since it does not have the air gap).  It has a =
high initial inductance, but that decreases with current.  At rated =
current, the core saturates and inductance decreases substantially.  In =
"the good old days", when output capacitors were 2 or 4 mfd, it was =
always necessary to have a smootihing choke follow a swinging choke - to =
maintain enough LC to reduce ripple.  Modernly, ripple is of no real =
concern because of the large amount of C used. =20

So, the question is: if the C provides all of the filtering necessary, =
why not use a swinging choke alone in front of the capacitor to reduce =
peak voltage output.  A minimum bleeder current would be required =
(perhaps 1/10 of total plate current).  It would be fun to watch the =
output with a scope under s.s.b. modulation conditions. One caution: the =
collapsing field of the choke during shut down can blow out diodes - so =
beware. =20

As to whether the best use of your swinging choke is for a book end, I =
cannot say.  However, it is better than leaving it on the floor where =
you walk into it from time to time and regret it, but postpone moving it =
until the next time you walk into it. =20
