Thanks for all the replies (mostly private e-mails)

As it turns out, Len (K8GM) had been aware of the recommended
ramp up procedure found at http://www.nd2x.net/tube-prep.html,
and followed it with the tube in question before ever applying
drive. Yet, the tube still acted up. Perhaps he has a particularly
extreme case, and needs to try another tube.

What I should have asked the group was whether anyone else has
followed the recommended procedure and STILL had problems. That
way, Len might have a kindred soul to commiserate with :)
