I read that when the cross channel power link was first tried, it used AC,
but the sea water led to large losses because of the dielectric's poor
power factor - it apparently used two conductors. Thus DC.

The most imaginitive(?) use of 3 phase must have been the Ganz system of
railway electrification - two phases on overhead wires, and the track as
the third! Used in Autria and Italy amongst other places - it finally
disappeared from Italy some thirty or so years ago.
