Scott -- The recommended tune-up procedure in the Owner's Manual talks
about using more current than the tube mfg's max rating of 400mA. I
would tune a single 3-500Z at 400mA - which requires c. 70w drive. If
the exciter is a 100w radio without a power output control, adding c.
25-ohms in series with the cathode coupling C will prevent overdriving
the tube, result in a more accurate tune, and avoid rotten splatter.
