Sodium valves were used in a lot of internal combustion engines, not 
just Nortons!  The idea is that the liquid sodium inside the valve stem 
would actually flow, thus transferring heat by convection away from the 
valve face and through the valve guide to the cylinder head.  In the 
case of coils, there's no obvious analogue for the cylinder head to 
dissipate heat.
