[Amps] Filter Capacitors

Dear Folks,

If you were to physically examine an oil-filled capacitor
that is rated for filter service, with a description of
"x" WVDC versus an energy discharge capacitor of
the same capacitance and "x" Peak Voltage, DC, you will
see that the physical size of the energy discharge unit is
a bunch smaller than the filter-type cap.

Energy discharge capacitors need to be de-rated to 60 percent
of their value when considering them for power supply filters
beause any filter cap will heat up during normal operation,
and the energy discharge variety are not as tolerant to constant
operation as the l;arger filter type caps.

While Maxwell sure sells a decent oil-filled energy-discharge cap
they target the application to laser excitation, etc., and not to
HV power supplies.

My best suggestion is if considering E-D caps, to series them
with associated resistors, and make sure they are in the air flow
in the power supply module.
