I've got to stress that I've no experience of lightning problems, but I 
wonder whether a ground rod really contributes much. A 4' rod here 
measures around 200 ohms, a couple of shallow 30' wires closer to a 
tenth of that. There seems little point in bashing rods in from the rf 
point of view.
