When I was a young and foolish Technician class licensee, I tried 
burying a six meter dipole to see how it would do. I worked a friend 
about ten miles away with it, but I always suspected there was more 
radiation from the coax and transmitter chassis than from the antenna.

One never knows about these things. :-)
