Carl,

Yes, you can. One of the neatest amplifiers every made utilized a single 
813 positioned horizontally, - the Central Electronics 600L. Look at my 
restoration here:

The tube must be properly orientated - I don't recall off hand what that is 
but it's out there in the literature.
