About using a PIC or equivalent in a transmitter:

Don't ever use it for protection where, if it failed for any
reason, things could cause hardware problems (or human
problems).

On high-powered transmitters that are computer-controlled,
the arc-sensors and so on are always at least backed-up
by relays.  The kind that operate on DC, not solid state.
