[Amps] Class C "squelch" for IMD ??

2 meter Repeater Solid State 50 watt amp running class ( unknown, but  
some sort of semi-linear ssb compatable mode )  Mirage Class.

The discussion last night on our six meter net was about how moving  
this Amp from linear to class C would improve the IMD of the exciter  
driving it.
( well, not the exciter, but the overall IMD at the Amp output )

I argued that with FM, once the amp conducts, it conducts and changing  
the bias levels would not make the exciter "better or worse ".

Am I wrong here ?
