REPLY:

30 watts dissipated in the toroid?  Considering that the toroid is
generally wrapped with insulating tape which helps trap heat, and the
wire is insulated too,I think you have identified the source of toroid
failures. 

That much power in a small area which can not readily dissipate it can
lead to some astonishing temperatures in a short time. 

That's assuming your percentage figure is accurate. Is it?
