   Since "p means 10-12 (million-millionth), so 1000 pF = 1 nF" you are going to build a 
500 to 1000 pF capacitor?

   I would think about putting a 50 pF to 500 pF in parallel with a 470 pF doorknob (or 
similar) fixed capacitor.  That should save you some space right there.

   If the HPA is going to cover ONLY the top band, a simple mock up with the tubes "in 
position" will tell you the true capacitance range that you really need to cover that one 
band so a fixed (or several in parallel) in parallel with a variable just covering the 
remainder of the capacitance range will make things even smaller.
