Well, you can't insure them for a start because that will give away 
the value of them.

On the customs declaration, just describe them as a gift. Value nil.

## agreed.  This is a two edged sword, so be careful.  You CAN'T
say they are a gift.. and worth $20.00.... then turn around and insure
em  for $300.00

it both ways !    You try calling it a gift... then insure it  for $300.00
the fellow in SA  will be charged duty on $300.00 .    IF you send it
US airmail.. and it gets damaged.... SA  post office will say it got broken
in the usa... and  US postal will say it got broken in SA.... so u will have  a
helluva time  collecting any insurance anyway.   IF it's lost, that's a separate
issue. 

##  You may as well call it a gift.. value $10.00    and don't bother with insurance.
Just make sure the tubes are lined with foam rubber on all 6 x sides, then  TRIPLE
boxed.  Then label it really good, then  CLEAR packing tape over all labels.  PRINT
Everything.  If you can't throw it 20' up in the air, without breaking it.. you don't have it
packed right.   Ditto with dhl/fedex/ups etc.   I'd stick with US airmail.   IF you use
fedex/ups/dhl.... and ship outside the USA. the rest of us  get screwed even worse..
with  BROKERAGE FEES... that are never charged on any stuff arriving via airmail. Then 
the poor fellow will get screwed twice.... for import duties.. and also sky high brokerage
fees.
