Hi Gary,
Although it's of little / no concern to the person initiating the shipment, the receiver of anything sent to Canada by way of a commercial carrier is liable for for the brokerage fees that said shipper incurs in getting the item across the 49th parallel...
I speak from experience.
Years ago I received a $35.00 keyer from Texas via UPS, & the brokerage fee was the (then) minimum of $25.00---almost the very same value as the keyer itself!
I have never encountered this hidden levy dealing with Canada Post / the US Post Office.
Unfortunately, Canada Post workers are presently on strike here, so I would assume that the brokerage fee index is earning a LOT of extra $$$ for the commercial carriers right about now...

## real old news gary...that nonsense has been going on for a long time. local UPS office gests at least a doz angry screaming folks in there every day of the week. A friend at work found a way around that..and found that ups does have
an international shipping arrangement..that minimizes the brokerage fees. I got screwed a few times myself... when, like an idiot,.. i forgot to tell the vendor to ship via us airmail. When my new 253 lb dahl arrived via motor truck
and NOT UPS] a few yrs back... I cleared it myself at local customs office. The trucking co was just 3 x blocks away..and gave me the paper work. I ran down the street to fed gov customs office... and paid the gst + pst tax...and that's it.
## I did talk to UPS in eastern canada's main office.... and she gave me the exact break down of what the brokerage feed consist of. She rattles off 13 x different 'fees' etc....and they were the most stupid things u can think of. They total em all
and call it 'brokerage fee' . when u get the paper work, u will never see that break down either. IF i had an independent broker look after the brokerage on my dahl xfmr... he would have charged almost as much as ups does.
When I had my UST-HDX689 shipped up here last year via local trucking co.... they used an independent broker... who charged a flat $80.00 ..which is ok for a 5000 lb tower, k7nv prop pitch rotor, and new 3/8" chromolly mast.
## Look at it from UPS's point of veiw. The brokerage is broken down into 13 x segements... and just cuz ur $35.00 keyer is not worth much doesn't mean they don't incur expenses shuffling paper work.
## having said that.... I notice that anything that arrived via FEDEX.. didn't cost me anything..go figure.
