[Amps] Zener Screen Regulators

I have heard, thru the years that there is electron flow without the 
filament or cathode being heated
although it is very little.
with the filament or cathode being heated ,there is a "boiling off of 
electrons"so to speak
and the process is greatly accelerated .
make any sense ?
