Why would you get a surge ? Every thing has been "on", the caps are charged most of the way, you are just going up a couple hundred volts.

That's a terrible design.

## The real trick is that when you switch from CW to SSB,  your typ step start  circuit
is non-functional..and u get one helluva surge.
