U can also buy the ameritron plate choke from Tom Rauch, W8JI...at his new
business website... CTR engineering.com. These are a more precise,
tested for resonances etc.

I know several folks who tried to homebrew the ametritron choke..and they
all blew up on 10m. The issue is... you can buy magnet wire, in 4 x
different insulation thickness's....which will change everything. The 27 ga
magnet wire with thicker goop on it, will use more space on the
former..for a given number of turns..which changes interwinding capacitance
and also end to end stray C..and resonances will shift about. If the gaps
are not xact, and precise, u will have a bad day.

It also depends how close to any metal, or dielectric the ameritron choke
is.

I have heard of at least 5 of the ameritron chokes blowing up in the last
7 months....and they were ALL on 17m band... go figure.

Even more baffling is the oem drake plate choke in the L4B...which I
measured at 154 uh..... which does not seem to resonate in any of the 9 x
HF bands.
