I repaired equipment that used them in various places.  Found the pem nuts to be both good and bad.  If they were installed in the correct environment where the knurled surface can get a bite and they are installed well they work.  Rivet nuts are similar in behaviour.  Compressed well on the correct range of thickness and all is good.  Handy thing for the rivet nuts is that they are available in a few sizes at Home Depot with an install tool.  Good for small jobs or repairs.
