Comments:
After a lot of "fanatic" WRTC qualifier single-opping and consequent sleep-deprived weekends amidst hectic work weeks, my motivation to participate in yet another contest was pretty much zero.... :) Anyway, SAC participation is a national duty if nothing else, so I still wanted to give it my best shot.
Band conditions were not the best this time; fortunately they at least topped last year's catastrophic showing! Still they left much to hope for, which in turn created a pretty optimal situation for operating two bands simultaneously to bring the QSO rate up. It's tougher on SSB than on CW, especially with serial numbers, but happily one learns by doing, step by step.
On Saturday, 15m showed some life with even a few NA DX QSOs, but 20m was the place to be. The band didn't completely close until very late, although the late-night NA stations were occupied with local QSO parties and I wasn't able to raise their attention. The low bands provided nice rates at first, but by 01z it seemed everybody was in bed so I decided to go for a nap too. Sunday was a slog, with a few highlights interrupting the drudgery. I was most pleasantly surprised by long-path QSOs with OA6Q on both 20m and 15m around 11z!
Apart from a brief power outage on Sunday morning, I'm happy to report that everything on the technical side worked well. Many thanks again to Martti OH2BH and Leena OH2BE for use of their fine summer cottage and station, and to all for the QSOs! Thanks especially to all those operators who were happy to go along with my band QSY requests for the multiplier.
