Sorry for interrupting the callsign thread...
I am looking at some moutain top property this weekend in north Georgia. I
am wanting to hear from anyone on the reflector who has operated from or is
currently located on top of a mountain.
Is it worth the effort? This will be alot more work than buying something on
the flats and want to KNOW what I'm getting myself into.

Was it that way in '74? It wasn't the case when I got in in '73, but the rule
was changed not too many years later, however, I thought it was in the late
'70s. It seems that before the rule change citizenship and not just residency
was required.

The world has changed a lot since the "Pick Your Own Callsign" craze of
the mid 1970's.
Political correctness now reigns supreme.
In the interest of "fairness", this means absolute equality for everyone.
I wouldn't be surprised if the vanity callsign program becomes a free-for-all,
with newly licensed Novices and no-code Techs being given the same treatment
as pre-WWII Extras.
A pretty sad state of affairs....

P.S. For phone, the I is horrible. Neither India nor Italy seems to have
the right punch. On CW, with fluttery, time-dispersive paths, the I often
is mistaken for a T.

A long time ago. To get a US call a foreign national must pass the US tests
and have a US mailing address. Same as for any citizen. Those who don't
want to take the tests may apply for a reciprical license, which requires
signing portable.
Only foreign agents (?), ie government officials are not allowed to obtain
a US call.

Great idea that should have been implemented long ago. If keyers can do it,

I've always been happy with my call sign, although recent discussion
suggests that it's maybe time to reconsider. I'll probably stick with it
though.. I've been accused of putting a few Novice fists into casts
or splints. Mine isn't an easy CW call, but it sounds nice and has great
recognition factor.
In Canada, we're just about to do a major callsign restructuring, probably
including 2X1's. The first published proposal up here for allocating calls
includes a condition that one could only keep his 2X1 for a 2 year term,
and it may be renewed if someone, somewhere agrees that you
have been active enough to deserve it! This might be seen as renting a
call, with lease renewal depending on how much your landlord likes you.
I think that it was a valid first suggestion, but I'm hoping for
something different. All is still under negotiation.
I can surely reccommend V's as fun to have in your call. Any votes..
should I keep it or dump it when the time comes?

..yes sweet CW can be like sweet JAZZ, or blues if you must.
whilst I am a fusion man, the fact that so many CW enthusiasts are Jazz
buffs has been noted by many...the late G3FXB spoke of it once. Some of
the better Jazz collections are probably held by CW buffs. Enjoyment of
good CW is indeeed like enjoyment of good music - it lifts the sole.

..having several times used X phonetically, I too have found it to have
very few phonetics...especially ones which non-Jeopardy Tournament
Champions would be familiar with.
My favorite set of phonetics, given me by K7JA, are K 1 Zulu Xerox...when
I hear them I know it is Chip calling...
Tho' it appears cumbersome to be limitted in one's phoneticablity by having
an X...is it not a good thing to have your letter sound but one way?
Haven't we been trying to focus in on one set of phonetics so that the JA's
can communicate with us rapidry and easiry?
X-ray lives, it is a survivor...it is a good letter, not one which should be
X-Rated.

NOSC MiniMUF-85 and MiniMuf-3.5 fortran programs, converted them to 'c' and
added a world map display that shows the MOF (NOT MUF!) prediction around
the world at a glance. The display interface allows you to create animated
sequences in either a rectangular or polar (either north pole, or centered
on your QTH) display for a 24 hour period. Since the MiniMuf code was
obiously not a good predictor of contest openings where we often open 10 and 15
meters when the predicted MUF is well below those bands, and close it long
after the predicted MUF has dropped below them, I went into their formulas
and ripped out many of the kluged up corrections they had added and added my
own. Now i can take CT contest logs and extract the actual observed openings
and 'score' my predictions. Another part of the program adjusts the formula
constants to find better fits... after running many itterations on data from
my M/M operations I have arrived at what appears to be fairly reasonable
predictions. The morning openings to Europe on 10 and 15 are a bit later
than predicted, but not by much. I have also added low band predictions
based on a BBC shortwave broadcast covereage predictor, this model needs
more work but already provides some interesting data. both long and short
path displays are provided, along with sunrise/set lines, and great circle
paths.
Now what am I getting to... As I said, I have tuned this using my station's
results over the last few years. I would really like to be able to compare
to more station's logs. Unfortunately the best ones for this are large M/M
logs, although a serious M/S data could be useful. I would really appreciate
anyone that could help me get CT .bin files for this project from M/M
stations across the country or from other countries. Logs covereing the
last couple years would be interesting because of the range of solar flux
values we have had. In return I will gladly supply copies of the program
and updates as the data gets analyzed.

Joe Walsh is a semi-famous rock guitar player who came to prominence as a
member of the Eagles rock group. He used to belong (may still) to the

Couple of items...
I was too busy to download my CQ-CONTEST mail for about 5 days, during
which time all this pick-your-call stuff erupted. Over 200 messages came
flooding onto my hard disk! Sheesh! Wonder if the more generic ham
newsgroups and mail lists have been as prolific on this topic, or are we
out on the edge of the curve? (Never mind, I know the answer...).
Last time we all had the chance to pick calls, I sent in several
alternatives just in case my first choice wasn't available. All my
alternates ultimately got claimed by friends of mine (K1AR, K1NA, K1MM,
K1RT, etc.).
The guys most likely to have me wasted so they can get my call are
high-school classmate K1BG, and non-contester K1DJ (who once sent me a
very angry letter demanding that I insist on DX stations getting my
call right, since he kept getting buro cards he didn't want after every
major contest (proving that G really is a crummy letter on phone).
Then there was the time that AR and I set the North American WW SSB multi-
single record with the highly prized call HI8XWP (YOU try saying that 8000
times!).
And on the subject of famous hams...I know where you can find a very
accurate list of "celebrity" hams - it's in the CQ Amateur Radio Almanac,
which I spent all summer compiling. I promise I will never again trouble
the reflector with this sort of promotion, but the famous hams list was a
lot of work, since most of the existing lists were full of rumors, hearsay,
and errors, and I don't want to see one or more of the bad lists show up
here. Buy the book. You'll also get the winners of all the major contests
back to the beginning of time, and records in all categories. There's a
lot of stuff in the book, and I think most contesters will enjoy it. It's
just coming off the presses this weekend. Be the first on your block...
you can order from your favorite dealer or direct from CQ, or from Radio
Bookstore...
And just to whet your appetite, did you know that the authors of *both*
"The Joy of Sex" and "Everything You Always Wanted to Know About Sex" were
hams? (and some people think hams are just nerds...).

..don't do it man...your call is one of my favorites...even better than
VE4GV (sorry Rob).
I like its rhythm, anyhow. Having become a W4 I have been studying the
rhythms of letters within a 4 call, and the V works nicely. Perhaps this
was proved by Tom W4BVV whilst his station was in its heyday...or was it
the signal...or was it the ops...no I don't mean DQV on phone!
That's my two cents-as one in search of a new call presently...my advice is
keep this one.

Greetings from Studio City. (I was allowed to emigrate here in 1979
under a special provision that allowed for a few non-entertainment
industry-conncted residents.)
Since this is the Contest Reflector, I just wanted to go on record
that I've trounced fellow Studio City resident Joe Walsh in every
contest I've entered. Poor guy hasn't had a chance ! :-)
For that matter Gary Shandling hasn't been much competition either.
