Apparently it doesn't matter what contest I'm in or how many helpers I
have. Look at the SS Ph results for Pacific Division, multi - operator.
5 stations within an eetsy-beetsy of the leader.

Eric's short by 70 q's again! This time it took 24 hours to come up on
that particular end of the stick.

Good news-

RIVER CITY CONTESTERS RIDE AGAIN!!!!! - Local Club Category SS

We had a couple of new operators that noticed how antsy the rest of us
were at the end of the contest. Now they know why you need to eke out
everything you can!!

I like the format in QST: no complaints. I figured out how to scan the
results to regroup scores into sections.

I highly recommend the local club competition in SS. Maybe the 40 mile
diameter restriction can help in quantifying differences in locations.
Maybe not. I don't mean to start this stuff again.

Subject: PolyPhaser Price Info
Message-ID: <392 at gs>

Hi, I pass this on "FYI"; I have no connection to the company/distributor:

Had a chat with a Mr. Ron Block who is with W.R. Block Associates, Inc.
a PolyPhaser distributor. In looking into some prices for my personal
installation, he said "I'm glad you mentioned that your a ham, you get
10 percent off the price"(s). He said his company (W.R. Bolck) and the
factory (PolyPhaser) give this discount to hams. He was unsure if other
distributors did so. The prices I received in the PolyPhaser catalog
were dated 'effective Jan. 1993' and are still valid, just take 10% off.

He also mentioned a new product thats not in the catalog yet, its a coax
grounding kit for use at the top and bottom of the tower, called 'Uni-Kit'
($25.95 each, less 10% for hams). Apparently you strip back the outer
coax covering, attach the kit, and apply the provided sealant to keep
water, etc. out. I found the "Striking News" that came with the catalog
interesting. The Feb. issue (as mentioned here before by someone else)
is mostly about ham station grounding. 73, Glenn KB1GW gswanson at arrl.org

Ed, you are correct; I, too, I just noticed, have not received any reply
to messages to W6YX. How long have you been trying? I just subscribed
(and did not get an error message) about 20 or 21 April.

Dang this MICROSOFT-WINDOWS-MAIL software! I haven't figured-out how to
get the ORIGINAL message back, so I can find what your personal address
is! Thus, SOME guys have just paid merely to find that I had to address
this thang to the equivalent of the General Postoffice!

And, for that matter, I have not yet seen activity on the other V/UHF
Reflector other than an acknowledgement and informatory message to me. Do
you subscribe to vhf.icons_font at xeroxaffiliates...etc., also? How much
activity have you seen there, and what side of the pond does it mostly
originate from?

Many thanks to everyone who has offered us shelter from the cold
Dayton night air this coming weekend, you guys are alright - I don't care
what those 2-meter FM guys said about contesters.

Fortunately thanks to the efforts of some OK eights, we have our
room all squared away....three nights....we are SET! The only thing left to
do is get ourselves there - then its certain to be a downhill slide into the
abyss we know as Dayton........its only the Black Hole if you get off the
elevator at the 12th floor!

We would like to thank all of you who have offered us space in your
rooms...once again I see why I'm damn glad to say I'm a ham.

Subject: New country files for CT dated 21 April 1994
Message-ID: <9404260359.AA12443 at us4rmc.pko.dec.com>

I have uploaded new CTY files to various places. Release notes are at
the end of this message.

Here's how you can get them:

1. FTP gatekeeper.dec.com:/pub/misc/hamradio/cty.zip

2. Send a mail message to MajorDomo at mlo.dec.com and reqest the file you
want by putting a command similar to the following in the BODY of the
    mail message:

	get ct-user cqww.cty

The files that have changed in this release are:

ARRL.CTY CT8 country file for use during ARRL DX contest
CQWW.CTY CT8 country file for use during CQ WW DX contest
IARU.CTY CT8 country file for use during IARU HF Championship
CTY.DAT CT9 country file (all DX contests)
CTYHDG.PRE geographic (latitide/longitude) data for CTYHDG
	HISTORY.CTY revision history
	README.CTY info sheet

3. Download CTY.ZIP from the CT BBS (508-460-8877) or CTY-403.ZIP from the
    W6GO BBS (916-992-0923).

                           REVISION HISTORY
			   ----------------

New CTY.DAT for CT Version 9!

	* CT version 9 has a new country file called CTY.DAT. This
means there is now a single country file for all DX contests.
In addition to the data previously stored in three different
CTY files, CTY.DAT also includes the continent explicitely
for every country, latitude and longitude (no more need to
run CTYHDG, since beam headings are now computed internally
by CT), and a local time offset from GMT. In addition, all
of these parameters can be changed on a prefix-by-prefix basis.
The special characters used to do this are described in the
	  CT version 9 manual.

Note that some primary prefixes in the CTY.DAT file (for
example, 4U1V) are preceeded by an "*". These countries
are only valid for the CQWW and WAE contests, and the "*"
tells CT version 9 to ignore them otherwise. Please do NOT
	  remove the "*".

Known problems:

	* CT8 can override zones on a prefix basis, but can only
override continents on a country basis. This doesn't
work in a few cases, notably IG9/IH9, which are in CQ
Zone 33, and hence in Africa, but will be logged
as Europe. Neither does it work for the part of Turkey
that is in Europe - there is no way to just override the
continent for the TA0 and TA1 prefixes. This is really
only a problem for the IARU HF World Championship. In
CQWW, the European part counts as a separate multiplier,
hence CT gets the continent correct. In ARRL, contacts
from W/VE are the same number of points whether Turkey
	  is in Europe or Asia.

This is not a problem in CT9, because you can now override
the continent for a given prefix.

	* CT doesn't handle prefixes such as FR5ZQ/J correctly.
Listing FR/J as a prefix for Juan de Nova in the country
file doesn't work unless a station signs "FR/J" as his
callsign. If you work one of these islands, you'll have
to add it to the country file manually. Otherwise "/J" will
be logged as Japan, "/G" as England, "/T" as Reunion,
and "/E" as an unknown prefix.

Changes since 9 February 1994:

24 Mar 1994:	(never released)
		* Changed 9M0S to 9M0 as prefix for Spratley, 1S.
		* Changed prefixes for China from B to B[G,T,W,Y,Z] (Almanac).

as prefixs for Asiatic Russia, UA0.
		* Removed Walvis Bay, ZS9 and Penguin Is., ZS0 (deleted
		  DXCC countries).

21 Apr 1994:	First release for CT Version 9, which uses CTY.DAT.
		* Changed primary prefix for Bouvet to 3Y/b.
		* Expanded prefix list for United Nations HQ NY, 4U1U.
		* Changed primary prefix of Yemen to 7O. Alias prefixes
		  are 4W and 7O.

		  GM0MZD, GM0OMV, GM3UPU, GM4ZEX. (1994 CB)
		* Added KG6RE as prefix for Mariana Is., KH0. (1994 CB)
		* Added KG6JKR as prefix for Guam, KH2. (1994 CB)

		* Revised S. Shetlands, VP8/h.
		* Added ED0BOD, LU1ZA, LW3DPP, VP8BRT and VP8LU as prefixes
		  for S. Orkneys, VP8/o. Removed LU5ZA, EC0BOD, VP8CKC.
		* CIS PREFIX NOTE: I have retained some of the old alias
prefixes because they are still in use. They will be
phased out when those republics have totally switched
over to the new prefixes. There does not appear to be
any overlap with any new prefixes in use.
		  - Changed primary prefix of Ukraine from UB to UR.
		  - Changed primary prefix of Belarus from UC to EU.
		  - Changed primary prefix of Azerbaijan from UD to 4J.

		  UA1N. (NT2X)
		* Changed ITU zone of UA8V, etc. to 33.
		* Added prefixes with RE, UE to UA1N, UA2 and UA9.

Message-ID: <92940426040929/0005543629NA2EM at mcimail.com>

After K1ZX's posting yesterday, I thought I had better check our reservations
at Stouffer's...they had us arriving on the 27th (Wed) and leaving on the
30th (Sat), with no reservation for Saturday night...we are arriving on the
28th (Thu) and hoping to leave on the 1st (Sun)...it was easy to change the
arrive date, but we are wait listed for the Sat. night room.

They told us that we had put the 27th on the reservation form last year...as
i look at the reservation form, they had the dates of the HamVention shown
as the 28th through the 1st, not the 29th as shown in the HamVention
publicity...we assumed that we would arrive the night before, hence the
27th...guess we and they should have looked at a calendar...I think all will
be ok, but you might want to check your reservations and dates.

Could be worse...we met someone who had used the wrong info, obtained last
year from convention materials, to reserve rooms, air travel, etc. for last
weekend! CU there...73 de Dave & Barb, W6QHS & KK6QM dleeson at mcimail.com

Since MasIII has released ped411i.zip, I have received a several
requests and queries on getting ped411i.zip without FTP.

Now it is also available by sending mail
To: ped-request at qed.laser.ee.es.osaka-u.ac.jp
with a body line

get ped411i.zip.uu

or

get ped411i-.zip.uu

It will automatically mail the UUENCODED file
-rw-r--r-- 1 kitagawa users 84544 Apr 23 12:03 ped411i.zip.uu
or
-rw-r--r-- 1 kitagawa users 77491 Apr 26 00:19 ped411i-.zip.uu
back to you. You need UUDECODE.

The latter does not contain PED.JPN (Japanese readme file) and therefore
a little bit smaller. (for those who pay for every bit and second.)

Please direct messages about PED itself to the author, MasIII

Our cluster connects downline via X1J nodes. If the connection is lost
the intermediate nodes "hang onto the connection" and the cluster
does not recognize it is disconnected. Any information on theory and
fix will be appreciated. 73, Dave.

After 110 days in beautiful downtown Croatia, I am back
where people speak English by choice.

I had the opportunity to do both halves of CQWW 160 and ARRL
DX, the FOC Marathon, and SSB WPX with the group at 9A1A.
This is a hard working bunch of dedicated contesters!

I'll be at Dayton with pictures and 9A1A QSLs.

It was intreresting to hear the CQWW rule whines from
another part of the world.

Two things:

1. File name on CT BBS is CTY.EXE, not CTY.ZIP.

2. I will continue to maintain old .CTY files for CT version 8. I create
all the files from a single master database, so it's no extra work, it
just makes the .ZIP archive bigger.

Subject: Check your Dayton reservations

Dave Leeson was rambling on about:

> but you might want to check your reservations and dates.
> Could be worse...we met someone who had used the wrong info, obtained last
> year from convention materials, to reserve rooms, air travel, etc. for last

I went to confirm my Dayton reservations last night and had no problem. I
gave them my confirmation number and the hotel confirmed that my reservation
was still good for April 22 and 23. When I wanted to add a day to arrive
thursday, we both realized that 22 and 23rd are GONE.

Turns out that on page 90 of the 1993 Dayton Program, the page with the
numbers for the hotels, it says in BIG BOLD PRINT: April 22, 23, 24, 1994.
That was what I was reading when I made the reservations last fall. In
fact, I even wrote the confirmation number in the margin beside it!

I wonder how many showed up at Dayton last weekend.

Thanks to Doug, K1DG, I was able to get fixed up with a room so all will be
well, but for a moment there, it looked pretty grim. It is this weekend,
isn't it? Or did I just miss the whole thing? :-)

Peter
