I didn't think I was going to get anywhere, but I sat down to see
what I could hear and wound up spending maybe six hours during two
evenings/nights to see what I could hear. I was very surprised.
Yaesu Ft990 via external tuner (MFJ 941E) to random length (well, 147
feet or so) dipole at heights varying from 30 to 75 feet maybe.
The antenna length is disastrous for the MFJ tuner. If I use the
maximum inductance and maximum antenna capacitanc, I can get 3:1 or
so at 1800 khz to maybe 1.5:1 at 1890. If I try full power, at least
near the low end, I hear the arcing in the tuner, so in the past I
have run only about 15-20 watts (got maybe 10 or 15 contacts last
year trying this out).
This year I used the rig's internal tuner to match the rig towhatever
the MFJ was presenting on that side and was able to feel comfortable
running from about 40 watts at the low end to maybe 60-75 watts
around 1880 khz. This made the radio perfectly happy; I don't
imagine it was particularly good for the tuner (its meter action was
quite exciting, though meaningless).
But it worked well beyond my expectations; my state count on 160 went
from 7 to 31 (and I added two more states worked for CW-WAS);
furthest reach I guess was two WY stations, and Jay and another in
CO. I colored in all sections in districts 1, 2, 3, 8 and 9.
Any comment on using two tuners in a row (given that I know it's
just a quick hack to get on the air with an inappropriate antenna)?
Now I keep thinking about all that electric fence out back -- should
I run a wire to the receive antenna post on the radio? (I'd have to
remember to pull the fuses on the fence charger while I operated,
though!)

Hello Guys,
We are ready to be on the ARRL 10 m, no the two by one IR4T callsign due lack
of autorization, but only my own callsign I4UFH in the multi single category.
Please look for us, beam to Europe, we will be 28.025 or 28.495 from 14.00Z
to 16.00Z looking for US.
We are transmitting from the TOP of a WaterTower of 200 feet, with a 5 el Yagi
wide spaced, not to bad in US direction !!!
Hope to enjoy you in the Contest.
73 de Fabio I4UFH one of IR4T Contest Group.
PS for ON6TT we will try to be on 80m, 3775 Khz for Score Rumors around 19.00Z
of Sunday evening, or may be one hour later if we engaged a W6 and W7 pile-up
on 10 !!!!! Please Confirm I will read the messages friday evening, just before
the Contest.

Especially when ARRL asks for everyone to stay out of the window, which
they state as 1830 - 1850 kHz. That doesn't leave much of the band,
especially for people using narrow bandwidth antennas.
I think things would go over better if they (ARRL) only asked for 5 kHz,
not 20.
But in the meanwhile.....

I went to the Rochester Hamfest last May and found it to be a mere shadow
of what it was like the last time I went (about 15 years ago). Perhaps
Dayton chose the third weekend in May because it is a long weekend here
in Canada and more VE's will now go to Dayton. Maybe the folks at
Rochester could:
(a) improve their hamfest
(b) reschedule
Incidentally, the "Lilac Festival" in Rochester was far more enjoyable
for my XYL (a new ham) and I than the hamfest was.
Anyway, its just my opinion.

Haven't seen much in the way of an announcement. Is the sprint still on
this weekend?
