Notes:

Too much antenna work still going on Friday of the contest! Main antennas
for 20 and 40, plus secondary 80m antenna all not working... Had to take
down Force-12 80M dipole two weeks ago after one side broke in the wind, and
the re-taped coax for the 5el 20M then snagged on the tower top and pulled
out of the LTA balun. Topping that off the 2el 40M at 130' failed with a
shorted feedline between the tower top and the feedpoint! It was 27F and
35mph winds on Thanksgiving and we (nearly) fixed the 20M beam before
dropping the last nut to attach the feedline. Too cold to climb down, get
it, and finish the job. So Friday we finished that, took the 2el 40 off the
10' mast above the tower, moved the TH6 to 130', replaced the 40M coax and
put it back at the 120' level. Even had a couple of hours to get things
ready for the contest inside!

During the contest we managed to transmit 1500w into the front end of the
TS950, whew, what a smell burning resistors make! Loss of 30 minutes, swap
in the spare radio. Then the 40M amp was only putting out 900w on Saturday
night. Loss of 30 minutes trying to find problem (nothing found). Then
discovered it was in the low power position... CT 9.14 worked really well.
Even with strange serial cables and null modems, no toroids, no special
grounding - no crashes!

Some Europeans to work at 08-09-10Z Saturday morning on 15M, some nice SE
longpath on 20M at 07Z on 20M (VK8TG), and even heard 5R8DS on 40M longpath
Sunday morning. Frustrating to hear 5R8 XX9 YB 9V VQ9 J45 9M8 on 40M and not
be able to work them after the solar storm kicked in. That VU for the last
zone on 20M Sunday afternoon was really nice!

Biggest strategic error was putting 15 and 160M together, things were too
good Friday night on 15 and we didn't really get started on 160 until almost
02Z. Dissappointed that we weren't more competitive on 80M. The first night
we were about even with N2RM (we didn't know it then), but the second night
they had twice as many 80M QSOs. Stations to the South and East seemed to
get through on one call, while we kept calling. Similarly when 15M opened to
Europe on Sunday morning, those South and East did much better. Hard to
believe K5ZD had a 139 and 130 hour when we were at 89 and 87...

All in all the results were good, a solid #3 again in the east coast multi-
multi category (same as in ARRL DX CW this year). Beating N2RM and W3LPL
looks to be a harder task than we originally figured! One of these days...

Comments:
I worked Zone-15(SP5GRM) on 160m for the first time so far. Very tough
work from the northern Japan. The condx on 160 was great in the last
morning.
The first nite we had a good open to North America on 80m, but the static
was very high in the northern/eastern part of JA. Sorry missed some/many
stations. The second day was better, but the condx was worse.
Thanks to all for all the Q's, especially to the U.S.and Canada (1046Q's=
58.8% of the whole contacts). But I didn't work any of them on 10m.
I heard 10m opened, but I don't know if it was ok from the Northern Japan.
Cu in ARRL DX in Feb/Mar. I am planning to build a directional antenna
on 80m.

73--- Akira JA8RWU/KH2V

p.s.
I prefer 160, but recently very busy for taking care of the kids.
Maybe I will find the time to QRV in ARRL 160m next year which is my
favorite one when the sunspot gets low.
p.p.s.
When the sunspot increases, I like the 10m contest!
'Cause that is the only world wide type of contest which counts every
States/Provinces as multiplier like European/Caribbean/African countries.
Of course WPX is almost the same, but different...

Sounds like a lot of B.S. to me. I was not aware that SSTV had a "clear
channel" allocation on 20M. Seems like an abuse of power by the OO to me.
Is the ARRL aware of this??

For Beverages fed with coax at both ends, and terminated in
the shack (a nifty idea, which doubles your fun with one
wire), see K1VR, N1RC, "Six Antennas from Three Wires," 73,
October 1983, p. 10-16.

I love 'em.

I got one some years ago in an HK contest for calling an HK
on 14150.00000001 (the OO said it was 14149.9 - bah!). I
didn't get one for working XF4L on 21195 though (this was
completely inadvertent - trouble with Extra class licenses
is that you think you can go anywhere you hear the DX working
Ws, hah!).

Anyone want to claim the record for the largest number of
OO notices over a lifetime? Confession is good for the
soul and all that.

My total over 7 years...... 1 (as above)

I'm sure others here can beat this.
