The I.C.E lightning protectors use a shunt toroidal rf choke as the primary
protection; the arc-tube provides secondary protection. There is also a
shunt hv cap and a series resistor in the circuit. I understand that most
if not all other brands use an arc-tube as the sole protection element and
that failures are commonplace. I.C.E claims that out of 1000s sold, they
have never had a request for a replacement arc-tube. Perhaps you should
discuss your concern with their engineer or read their tech note on the
subject before you decide not to use their protector. The I.C.E factory
station uses these things and is purportedly operated in contests
right through the most severe lightning!

I'm busy rebuilding and adding to my Dxpedition/contest portable
station.
Does anyone have any outlets/information on portable masting? I'm
looking for suppliers, commercial makers, and other general hints.
Also am interested in lightweight, very strong, and storage efficient
guy rope. Some years ago I heard of a rope that was used in
commercial applications (phone companies ?) that would flatten out
when rolled up.
We used a Japanese manufactured 30' aluminum telescoping mast for a
Pacific trip in 1990, but that was a borrowed item obtained in Japan.
It was nice because it fit into a 5 foot long box.
The masts at 3Y0PI with the tripod legs look interesting.
Thanks,

A friend, VE3EP, wants to mod his 790A for use on packet at 9600
baud. He needs to know where to get output from discriminator and
where to feed audio to modulator. Any help, or where to get help will
be appreciated. Thanks Rick VA3TX

I take it back - they are there after all. Just spoke with them and was
promised a catalogue and technical reports "tomorrow."
