I liked the idea of this contest...however, zippo activity on CW. I think
I operated about 9 hours before giving up to boredom. Tried alternating
CQ's on 2 bands...kind of neat.
Stopped in the middle to fix a tvi problem- here's a useful hint I
learned: a guy in a room in our house was getting rf into his vcr. I tried
the standard fix of putting toroids on all wires going into the vcr. The
toroids helped, but still I was wiping out the audio. I then took all the
toroids off of the VCR and put some on the AC power lead to my station...a
complete cure! Moral: it's sometimes better to minimize rf leaks from your
own station than filtering every other appliance. I think I will look into
building/buying an AC line filter.

20 really sucked...only worked K6ll, Xe/aa6rx, Ab6fo, and n6tr. Heard the
TX guys working east coast. In the first half hour, made 9 qso's. Once
activity picked up on 40m, it was fun. As usual, N6TR LOG crashed when
Tree called me on 40 (haven't had a computer crash during a contest for
months).
	The usual name bifurcations...(Bev(o), Randal(l), (j/w)ayne...)
I'm sure that K5ZD sent me a "bevo".

>From the comments that I have seen on the reflector it seems
that the interest level for the second running of the SquINT
is high. Remember, this is NOT a hard-core event......the
kids are not competing for anything other than the
opportunity to say "hi" to someone in another part of the
country/world.

Tree, N6TR is the creator of the SquINT, I have attached
Tree's original post from last years SquINT below. I have
changed the date and added one thing in the exchange but
other than that it's the same operating event again.

The Second SquINT contest will be held on April 15th, 1995
at 1800z for one hour. Suggested frequencies are 14.270 -
14.300. Exchange name, age, favorite color and state.

There are two categories:

1. Parent-child/Adult-child category: All transmissions
must be made with real time speech from the mouth of the
child (sitting in your lap or near your lap). Whispering in
their ear is okay. Logging done by the control operator.

2. Child operating doing all of the logging.

Potty breaks do not count as off time. Add 10 points for
each diaper changed during the contest (up to a maximum of
30 points).

Final score = Number of minutes spent having fun in front of
the radio with your kid * the number of favorable comments
from your spouse about the activity and then add the diaper
bonus.

Mail your logs and comments to kids at cmicro.com

You should register with n6tr at cmicro.com before the contest
to get on the kids at cmicro.com list so that you can see all
the results.

Hope to hear you on the 15th!

WA2SRQ internet sprint results: 140 qsos -- 68 qsos the first
hour on 20m, 72 qsos the second hour on 40.

Conditions were terrible on both bands. 20 was almost dead,
nobody was very strong, and very few backscatter qsos. Had to
really dig to copy ab1t and k4pql, and didn't know k5zd was in
the contest until I heard him later on 40.

Signals were stronger on 40, but a thunderstorm came through
around 0100 causing high qrn for the last hour. I concentrated
on working the strong signals, which were the 5s and 9s. The
west coast was weak. Best signals by wide margin were n4ogw and
w9wi.

Comments:

This was a good start. I found newer hams know their Grid, most OTs
haven't a clue but were favorable on the concept of a contest with a
meaningful exchange. 4 DX contacts, conditions sucked. Concurrent
QRP and county hunters contests helped with contacts. I damn near
wore out my Rand-McNally looking up Grids.

I LIKE the 150 W limit and wish more contests would do the same.
Start time of 1200Z is different, not that effective if the conditions
are grim, but lets wait to hear from the other side of the pond....

GridLoc Contest results -> KB1GW
Operated about 8 hours.

A severe cold-front came through Connecticut last Tuesday with winds of >50
MPH.
Pine branches got into my 2-element (Cubex) quad, snapping a driven element
spreader off at the spider. The quad is wired for 10/15/17 and 20 meters.
On Friday evening, I cranked down and folded over the tower, removed the
offending branches from the quad wires (which remained attached to the
broken spreader).
I pulled the 8-inch stub of the broken spreader out of the spider and
reinserted the 12-feet or so of remaining spreader into the spider. Put the
quad (with sagging wires) back up in the air. Then, of course, on Friday we
had a storm of the solar variety. Spent Saturday gently soliciting contacts
on 20-meters, (above 14.250!), as it snowed outside! Sunday saw 50 degree
WX and the snow melted away -- along with winter?

Most ops seemed to enjoy the contest. Had many QSOs with those who don't
usually get into contesting, but thought they would give me a contact. Many
liked the "easy" exchange.
-I like the format and wish more had joined in. This could be a great event!
-There were 67 op's (out of 140 contacted) who did not know their grid
square.
-Here in the US, with condx the way they were (NO EUROPE!) the "middle" of
the US may have had the best shot at a decent score. Look out if Europe
comes into play!
-Heard someone on 20 meters KA5WSS(?) with over 300 Qs.

The Sprint has a special QSY rule: If you solict a QSO (ie: with CQ or QRZ),
after completing the QSO, you must QSY at least 1 kHz before calling another
station, or 5 kHz before solicting another QSO.

This means that you _cannot_ just sit on one frequency and call CQ, waiting
for other stations to answer. You _must_ search and pounce every other
QSO.

>I always supposed it's a US only competition. But now I see I was wrong...

Several groups are starting local Sprint contests. One in Europe and one
int Asia. What we are discusssing in this thread is how a world-wide or DX
Sprint might be organized.

What Dave meant by "hand-off QSO" is that, like a Relay-Team in a track
meet, the runner who is ending his sprint must QSO his team member to
"hand-off" the "baton" before the new runner may begin his sprint, making
more QSOs for the team.
