40 meters single band
244 QSOs 574 pts 142 mults = 81,508 points
Station - FT1000/Alpha 78 to a Cushcraft 402CD @ 85 ft
RTTY - KAM running WF1B software
Since packet was permitted, blew the dust of a C64 and a Digicom modem
and cartridge. Real kludgey setup with monitor to far left, keyboard to
far right (couldn't see monitor while typing on keyboard) and clip leads
to 2m radio.
Contest highlight - DP1KGI (S. Shetland) answering my CQ, for a new
country on that mode. Think this was the first time ever I worked a new
country in a RTTY contest. Could tell guys were foaming at the mouth
at this one. Even got a phone call asking me to "hold him" if he called
me again, hi.
Lowlights - After making three QSOs, I was ready to quit. The WF1B
software was all screwed up (so I thought) giving out 000 as serial
number and aksing me for QTH when logging a contact. Turns out I had CQWW
selected instead of WPX. Tnx to KA4RRU, and his help via packet to get it
right.
Seemed to be very poor activity, especially for DX. Guess that's expected
with a new contest? It probably didn't help that CQ didn't list the
contest in the calendar.
The intentional QRM caused by Packet stations and AMTOR/PACTOR stations
was really despicable. These guys try to "protect" their turf like the
SSTVers during a phone contest. Also had the usual CW ops QRMing me when
CQing around 7040.
Conditions were poor Fri and Sat nite. Lot of QRN from the snowstorm.
QSO breakdown as follows: 215 US 12 VE 17 DX
CQWW 93 (also 40 mtr only) 268 US 16 VE 209 DX!!
Where oh where has the DX gone?
Maybe next year. 73 Barry

...okay, so I'm goin to SF at the end of the month and I'm planning on
getting there Saturday....the NCCC guys (at least 15 or 20 e-mails, great
club) all have told me their meeting is the day before, damn I woulda loved
to have crashed that meeting, the budget (as always) is tight-probably no
rental car, even-so coming in a day early is out of the question, bux I
don't forsee coming to me from the FL lottery Saturday night....what to do?
....What To Do: Simple-read the Contest Reflector!
....Read the Reflector, whatcha mean ZX?
....Travel Savers, as per others and most recently W2VJN's posting, can save
you money over your ticket agent-lots o' money....the # is worth repeating:
1-800-462-9294
So, I will be saving in air fare more than the cost of an additional night
at the hotel in SF, so........HELLO NCCC, I will be coming into SF Friday
afternoon with plenty of time to make the meeting, cool. (Anyone give me a
lift to/from the meeting-I'm staying in Japan-town?)
THANKS TREY! For sponsoring the reflector - and allowing me to incorporate
some mainline ham radio into my vacation, no its not really contest related,
but as a typical contester seeking to get the most bang for his buck, heah.
Teresa says she doesn't mind, bless her-I will be out with the guys the
first night we hit town, this is one great wife.
