Brian, ND3F will be roving the East Coast during the June test.
My plan is to start in FM26 near VA Beach and operate from the Bay
Bridge tunnel in FM16/17/27 at about 90 minutes per site. Then in FM28 mobile
for 3 hours headed for the corner of FM29/28/19/18.
Then mobile in FM18/19 to sleep stop in FM08. Sun AM 0630 local
from FM08/09/18/19 and mobile in FM09 and FN00 to FN00/10/11/01 corner by
mid-afternoon. Total of 14 grids.
Will Be Using .137 (on all bands) as primary freq, or nearest
available open freq. Will have good antennas and at least 100w
on 6/2/1.2/.7M and 10W on .23M. Will try to spend a little longer
in FM26/27 and FN01 as they are fairly rare. Will also have FM on at least 3
bands if anyone wants...

Greetings, all!
Unless I have to work during part of the weekend (50% chance), I
will be QRV from EL29 on all bands, 6m through 1296, including
222 and 902MHz. I will be lucky to get out of the grid on 222.
Have 250w on 6, 170w on 2, 150w on 432, 75w on 902, 50w on 1296.

Absolutely! -- and while we're at it, how about more covers of both big
and little (but well-done) antenna installations. I'm still in awe of
the couple of set-ups I saw on CQ a few years ago - W0UN, for example.
But there's lot to learn from good small stations too.

Each time I go to Dayton I stop at the CQ booth and ask the editor to
please have a cover picture of a woman operating. I say that CQ has
had a cover picture of a dog with headphones, a cat sitting with a
male operator, and, a few years ago, a woman making breakfast for a
male operator.
I say that I don't care who the woman is, contester or not, me or any other
woman with a license. I also say I don't want a "I just operate 2-meters
so I can talk to my hubby" woman; I want a real operator.
Every year CQ says, "That's an interesting idea" but it's never happened.
Good luck, guys, in the search for little_gun_coverguys, small_antenna_
coverguys, and average_station_coverguys.

As I was standing in my back yard last night with my slingshot and
fishing pole trying to find the other end of my fishing line in the
dark, I was wondering what anyone would think if they saw me. Then I
thought that there must be hundreds of people around the world doing
exactly the same thing (well, ok, the others were tweaking their
3 over 3 40 meter stacks, not putting up 15 meter dipoles, but you get
the idea). I don't think anyone saw me, except maybe when I lit the
matches to seal the end of the poly ropes, but it gave me some comfort
to know I wasn't in this alone.
Good luck in the contest - and if you get that elusive K3 multiplier on
15 meters, you'll know the story behind the antenna.

I was the photographer of the October 1991 QST cover of the KS9K antenna
farm. While following this thread, I realized that it was probably the last
contest related cover QST published. So I checked:
Oct. 91 KS9K
Jul. 90 W9RE
Sep. 87 KN3T/VK9NT
Oct. 84 GJ3DVC
Feb. 82 a photo of the ARRL DX Test Plaque (well, I said contest
related...)
I checked back to Jan. 76, missing only a few issues in '77.
That's not very good representation. I also noted that Field Day made it
every year, sometimes more than once. There were some photos depicting
emergency communications, some featuring homebrew projects, a few with kids,
but by far the most prevalent subject was VHF/microwaves/EME/space
communications.
When my photo was published, I stopped by HQ and talked with various folks.
They encouraged me to submit more work, and asked specifically for the VHF
stuff. Some clearly see that as the future of amateur radio. They also
wanted kids, for obvious reasons.
They do not get very many submissions of cover quality photos. What's
"cover quality"? Well, for starters, use a low speed film - transparencies
(slides) are definitely preferred. My film of choice is Fuji Velvia, 50
ASA. There are others - the Kodachromes, the low speed Ektachromes, etc.
No 200 or 400 ASA Walgreens prints, please. Don't shoot a picture of your
subject - shoot a whole roll - various angles, lighting, etc. If outside,
go for interesting clouds as a backdrop for antennas. And make it SHARP.
In short, if you want to see more contest related photos on the QST cover,
submit some! Deluge 'em. Sooner or later we'll get something published.
The downside:
While I was at HQ, they showed me some of the letters written about my
photo. Sure, there were a few positives - "nice picture" letters. There
were also some whiners - "$%^*@#% Contesters should be banned, not featured
on the covers", etc. - they do get a lot of that sort of thing. My favorite
was the one that stated "That's not what Hiram Percy Maxim intended amateur
radio to be." Wonder if he knew Hiram? My dad had a passing acquaintance
with Mr. Maxim, and the stories he told make me believe The Old Man would
have loved contesters, and is probably rolling in his grave at the current
direction QST seems to be taking.
Personally, I have no particular desire to see any of my photography as a
backdrop for the trashy appearance of the current cover format, but to each
his own...If you can compose a good contest-related photo that will have
impact, even with all the garbage they'll print on top of it, by all means,
go for it. I bet they'll use it. And Susan King has a point too. Let's see
some YLs, YFs, even some Babes - but as operators, not as window dressing.
