          80 dipole at 26 feet

Soapbox:

Memory is a funny thing. Often it only recalls the good parts and dulls
how painful something can be. That is why I did QRP again this year.
You would think after doing phone QRP the last two years I would be smart
enough to go to 150 watts but NO, I had to see if I could beat last year's
score. I started out with a great first hour of 57 Q's on 15 but, the fun
stopped when I went to 40 meters after 0100. I don't know how many said,
"Your too light, try again later." Or they didn't hear me at all. My woarst
hour was 5 Q's. NA even put in a time off since it got to be 30 minutes
between Q's! I couldn't understand 80 meters, only one Q that night.
I pulled the plug at 04:30 and decided a full 24 hours on QRP phone
would shorten my life span. I had terrible dreams that night of going
through life with people saying, "Your too light, come back later."

I was back for more at 12:30 and discovered the ant I had used for 80
meters was actually the noise ant for my JPS ANC-4, up at 10 feet and
in a horizontal V configuration! (I had wondered that night why my bandwidth
was so small on 80.) Lesson learned, in the heat of the battle pay attention
to your antenna switches!! With 40 and 80 not so crowded I did OK Sunday
morning. 20 was easy with the beam and 15 was my best band. I live on
a small hill that slopes to the West which must account for my big signal
to the West coast. Several dounted my honesty about running QRP! 15 never
really opened to the East coast from here. I don't think 15 was as good
as last year either. In the end I didn't beat last years score and will
save this message so if I comtemplate running QRP again next year, I
will remember how painful it was! Thanks to all of you who showed lots
of patience to pull me out of the QRM!

I heard (and worked) W6BIP in SF. He doesn't work 'em very fast,
but he was there as in previous contests. The callsign database
says he just turned 84 years old. Good for him!

After a discouraging CQWW M/S effort we where ready for SS. This was
the first time to have gotten a clean sweep in SS. It took us less than
6 hrs to get the sweep and break 500 Q. I started the contest with a 110hr
which KO4EW was unable to top. (guest op/host competition)
We should have set up the radios so 1 op could have used both of them. CT
screwed the serial numbers up on the second computer so we used the 735 for
spotting mults, and checking band conditions.
Conditions where awesome, 20 was a bottomless pit. Never noticed QRN on
75 the QRM was so bad. Ran for awhile on the bottom of 75 till the QRM
got too thick then moved up ABOVE 3900. Managed to keep rate over 80 hr till
the local nose picker/ good ole boy net started, then the fun began,
net control got really p*ssed and moved the net on top of me, rate still
held up till net control got some dude with a real amp to shut the rate
meter off :(
Signals on 15 where good but could never get a run going, went there to
have a clear (read headach relief) freq after fighting QRM on 20.

A good time was had by all at KO4EW.

Comments:

This was my first contest! Thanks to all who were able to hear me and pull
me out.
I was only armed with a single Inverted Vee cut for 40M up 40'. I used the
built in AT in the
rig to get on 15 and 20.

Especially thanks to W5CCP in OK who really took the time to make the
contact with me.
The only OK station I heard. The high point was working VI, and MT.

I missed: DE MAR NLI IA PQ ME SC NE SF ND BC NWT WY PR PAC AK.

I was too nervous to even try calling CQ, so I just limited myself to S&P.
I am hooked now,
and ready to upgrade my Antenna situation, and hope to this score next time.
Hats off to all
who got the Sweep! Maybe some day......

started contesting in 1958..by sending in an SWL log for the LAC, and LAS
awards from Boys Life Magazine (You got it! Logged All
Continents etc). Heard some interesting Canadian accents on 14352 USB
passing some kinda coordinates
of location and several spanish QSOs from 14350-14380 USB in the late
afternoon....anyone know what gives here??

I think Im officially becoming an OF....I kept marvelling at how anyone
could have the perserverance to call
"CQ Contest" for so many hours straight....when just a few years ago I was
one of em.....
maybe its a passing phase..awaiting the return of 10meters.....we'll see

there is another level of SS delight that allows one to casually
contest....ie allows for many breaks...an exhange of kindness to an old
friend...a little TV..and time with the family.... and I am beginning to see
the pureness of that format..after seeing ONLY the hard core entry for many
years, Well there's nothing like perspective....
Its fun either way!

comments: Worked 2000th Q as clock rolled over to 24 hours! Took 3
minutes to get it- Thanks to WA1G!
Getting computers going caused us to start an hour late. Don't
think it hurt us though as our 1st hour was over 140 Q's.
80 meters was THE band. Good ol' boys left us alone in advanced
portion of band but cursed us a little on 3885 Sunday nite.
40 meters was disapointment. Thought we'd kick butt there, but
it was our's that got bruised!
10 from the middle of country is a lost cause. We never heard
thing on 10 even tho we spotted it all day Sunday.
Eleven Q's on 160 was a pleasant suprise.

Thanks to all for the Q's and the fun. CU all in CQWW CW. 73 de KM0L

WD4MUR, B, VA
77 x 77 = 11858
10 hours

Manual logging - computer was down. Decided to do a "one per" effort since
had lots of obligations on time this weekend. Lots of activity from most
sections - must have heard everyone in the contest.

Thanx to KH6RS for sweep at 2333Z Sunday. Thought I'd missed out on PAC
after 15 closed down with none heard. Also scarce: NH, SC, DEL.

Best moment for me was tipping one of the really big guns on where to find
WW3V in Del for his sweep.

Listened for 10 hours, worked less than 2 per hour the last few hours... Thank
goodness for the TS-870, no listening fatigue from the QRM (digital filters
really work well, and lack of IMDistortion helps a bunch).

73 to all, John WD4MUR

Figures I would pick what looks like one of the easiest sweep weekends
in recent memory for moving weekend! After finishing the major unpacking
Sunday right before sunset, I rounded up a short run of RG-58 and some
speaker wire (15' lengths or so) left over from the stereo installation
and got it as high in the trees as I could reach by climbing on top of
the car (about 12' or so).

Not surprisingly, it flat wouldn't radiate on 40, but with the tuner's
help did surprisingly well on 20 -- I got through 40% or so of my QSOs
without fills. 50 QSOs, all 20m, 23 sections, 0000-0230Z Monday.
22 of 50 QSOs with Texas. At 0045 or so the skip to 2/3/8/9 land opened
up nicely but few takers. KW8N biggest signal outside Texas. Honorable
mention to QRP KF9PL pushing S-meter almost to S9.

73 & CU on 10 in a couple of weeks sunspots errrr sporadic E permitting.
