I am thinking of converting a storm damaged HyGain 7-2 2el. 40m beam to a
7-3 by adding the director. Does anyone have either a 7-2 or 7-3 ? How does

the information of all concerned, Canada has ten, count 'em ten provinces
and two territories! The provincial abbreviations and prefixes for those
who *should* know, but don't, are as follows (I'll keep it simple--from East
to West):

This is an invitation to participate in the 38th annual PA QSO Party
coming up on October 14-15. You shouldn't miss this exceptionally active,
interesting contest. The Pennsylvanians come out of the woodwork and the
mobilers come from far away (well, at least from Connecticut) to
experience the thrill of high rates and excitement as PA's leading clubs
battle each other for contest glory!
Some facts and figures on last year's PAQP:

out of state)

Most QSOs (PA Station): 1,521
Most QSOs (Out of State): 598

By the way, the Pennsylvania QSO Party surpasses or compares very
favorably on the above parameters with that other famous October QSO Party
on the opposite coast. You don't want to miss either of these classic
events.
Lots of High Band Activity Expected
As you can see from the above data, there is plenty of activity. PA has
traditionally been a low-band contest with the action concentrated on 40
(both modes) during the day and 80 after dark. But high band activity has
been increasing in recent years and you'll find plenty of stations to work
on 20 (and 15 if it's open). At this time in the sun-spot cycle, however,
it is possible for most stations in North America to make lots of contacts
on 80 CW, which will be wall-to-wall signals Saturday night up until the 1
AM break.
A Training Ground for New Ops
A surprising aspect of the PA Party is its role as a training ground for
future contesters. To quote from W3HDH's write-up from the 1994 party:
"Once again, 'interclub' and 'intraclub' rivalries kept the keys pounding
and the microphones hot! While it may not be evident from the listings,
many of the clubs sponsored multi- operator stations included a
considerable number of new hams. What a great way to introduce the
newcomer to contesting."
It's also worth noting that for most stations east of the Mississippi, the
PAQP is a great event for the radiation-angle-impaired. If you can't
work 300-400 stations with your low dipoles, you just aren't trying.
K8HVT Issues Mobile Challenge
The K8HVT/M3 multi-multi mobile team of Hal and Larry (N2AZS) has issued a
challenge to mobile contesters everywhere. They are offering a case of
beer to any other mobile operation who can top their score in this year's
event. Hal and Larry have won the mobile category every year since 1989
(their record is 1,251 QSOs) and they have concluded that they are simply
unbeatable. Can't someone turn up and put this arrogant twosome in their
place? Right now, the only visible threat to their continued reign is the
questionable transmission in Hal's '86 Caprice Classic wagon. (By the
way, you'll find Hal calling CQ on 14035 most of the contest and Larry
moving between 40 and 80 the entire 22 hours. They're arrogant as all
getout but they'll very much appreciate your Q's - as will all the folks
in PA.)
The rules for the PAQP are contained in the October issues of QST (page
127) and CQ (page 76).

Here is the reply I promised to all who sent suggestions and ideas on
my KT34XA problems. Unfortunately, the results don't seem to be
very conclusive, or helpful. But here goes:
Friday Afternoon, after work, racing to beat the sunset, I decide
to check out a few things before the big takedown scheduled for
Saturday morning:
Climb #1 - go up the tower, remove the #14 copper links from the
balun, add 4 x 50 ohms resistors across balun. Climb down
to check SWR. It's now bad on all 3 bands. Seems problem
is balun or feedline, not antenna!
Climb #2 - Remove feedline from balun; terminate with 50 ohm load.
climb down, go in shack, check SWR. Flat on three bands!
Must be the balun is bad.
Climb #3 - Remove balun, put baggie over end of feedline to keep
water out while waiting for new balun to arrive from KLM.
Take balun into shack, terminate with 200 ohms, test with
noise bridge. Flat 50 ohms! NO PROBLEMS! Seems balun is
now fine!
Climb #4 - Take balun back up the tower, still terminated with 200
ohms, and connect to feefline. run down into shack, check
SWR, flat on all bands.
Climb #5 - Replace balun on antenna, connect #14 leads, run back to
shack, just as it starts to get REALLY dark. Phew! SWR
is normal on 3 bands!
So after all these gymnastics, the problem mysteriously disappears!
I can only hypothesize it was a bad connection inside the balun,
or some such rot. I'm sure the problem will reappear in a contest
sometime. I guess I should be happy that my record of rebuilding
KT34XA's is still perfect - no joint problems yet...
Thanks for all the help and suggestions. Maybe KLM should think
about a redesign for some of the problems mentioned. Of course,
they have a terrific thing going, so why bother !?

No he doesn't ... you fail to understand the multipliers for CQP. We understand
there are 10 provinces. But there are only 8 multipliers.

Your right ... it's our QSO party and we decided to have as many multipliers
OUTSIDE of California as INSIDE California. Seemed more fair to us that way.
So we lumped some of the provinces together. The rules were written the
way they were for a reason, not out of ignorance of geography.
DC? well, it's not a state. Actually, I believe the multiplier is MDC ...
Maryland/DC.
