I thought it was supposed to be a "DX" contest. It sounds domestic this way :-)

A couple of comments to clarify a few things people said in their responses.

First, the newer antennas use cap tubes with no holes on the outside. These
"holeless" tubes have vent holes that get drilled in the TOP of the INSIDE
3/8" tube at both locations. The latest cap tube insulators are blue.

Regarding those insulators, I recently received several new sets of them
that had air pockets on the inside surface (where it touches the 3/8" tube)
on about half of them. I had lots of extras, so I just chucked that bad ones.

Like someone suggested, if you buy one of these KLM's used, you are a fool
to put it up without rebuilding/updating it. It's a lot of work, but it'll
pay off in the end. I've bought 4 used KT34XA's so far, and each of them
had assembly
and/or corrosion problems of some sort. I've also put up three here in a stack,
and all three work exactly the same (perfectly). I not only rebuilt them using
new cap tubes, etc., but I put #6 sheet metal screws in all the clamp joints
(except the ones around the cap tubes), as well as thru the telescoping
elements. Of course, double check all dimensions before doing this as it may
be a little hard to get apart afterwards.

Be aware that KLM sells an "update kit" for the KT34A and XA. The XA one is
about $45 or so US. It comes with all new outside cap tubes (no holes), new
blue insulators, a tub of penetrox, a couple of worm clamps, and a set of
instructions on where to drill the inside tube for the vent holes, as well as
the latest dimensional drawing. I wouldnt put up a used KLM without installing
this kit, even if you have the latest design. You'll be amazed at the amount
of corrosion and tiny critters that can work their way in there.

Another minor tip which isnt critical is to retighten all the hardware after
final assembly and some temperature cycling (ie., come back 24 hours or more
later and retighten) Especially the boom to element worm clamps tend to loosen.
These should be tightened with a small ratchet wrench: nutdrivers wont do here.
This will help keep your elements straight after it's up.

The KLM requires a great deal of time and care to assemble correctly, and a used
one requires an even more thorough inspection of all parts for defects,
mostly of all the plastic pieces. Check the center insulator/mounts for
cracks (these
have supposedly been redesigned recently), check the plastic insert in the
90 degree hairpin tube, check the feed strap supports for cracks, and just
buy a new set of the cap tube insulators and replace them ($10 by themselves
or included in the update kit).

I've just read the 2nd days mail of 160 contest ideas. There seems to be =
3 constants, which, when combined with a little out of the box thinking =
could redirect the game into a whole new type of contest.
	- Distance seems to be a constant.
	- Grid squares have value.
	- Computers are all but a must because of #2 above.
Why not call it the 160 Marathon? Because of grid squares and computers, =
one doesnt have to have too much imagination to extend to a marathon =
concept. Say, for instance the first one to accumulate (what is a =
marathon distance? 20 mi 385 yds?) 203,850 km in the time period wins. =
So if the test is 24 hours and someone qualifies in 18.5 hrs as the =
first one done then he/she wins.Perhaps some mix of distance, time and =
geography to spice the pie. Can you imagine you finishing first with a =
unique to blow your mileage? There is room for some stratedgy if all the =
variables are looked at.=20
Holster your zippo's folks- I'm not married to this; just a thought!

OK... N6TR is working on a first draft of the rules. =20

I would like to hear from anyone who would be interested in doing some =
work
for the contest. If you are interested, please email me. =20

We need help with the following:

1. Checking logs. Tree supplies software.
2. Awards: Getting awards together and out in a timely manner. May be 2
jobs. One person gets awards printed, another gets them made out and =
shipped.
3. Announcements. Someone to coordinate announcements to the magazines =
&
newsletters.
4. Prizes: Someone to seek donations for prizes.
5. Club liaisons: I would like 1 person from each of the major =
contesting
clubs to act as a simple point of contact for info regarding the =
contest.
Basically you read some mail from time to time.

Thanks

Ya know, I kind of like the E&M field standards! For the location
priveleged (....land stretchin' out so far and wide...) I can see how the
FCC rules could be modified to ELIMINATE the 1.5kW limit and base it
entirely on field strength. Hmmmmm... towers 175 ft from the house, 117' to
the 34XA, nearest neighbor 1,688 feet away.....WOW.......4CX15,000 here I

I would prefer a full 42 or 48 hours contest because I think stamina is a
part of contesting (I was upset when they stopped having the 96 hour ARRL DX
Contest).
I also don't mind calling CQ all day long on 160 meters since that is when I
get most of my ham magazine reading done. I never seem to have time during
my normal hours. Just too busy I suppose.

Any 160M contest should be primarily a nighttime contest. If it means
getting two good nights of 160 meters into the contest instead of one, then
having time-off hours would be ok with me. Since the contest is to be held
in the dead of winter, I would suggest making it a 48 hour contest with only
30 operating hours allowed. Off time would be a minimum of 6 hours for each
break (except at the beginning and the end of the contest).

However, our winter is someone else's summer and the length of theirr nights
to operate would be rather short. If this is to be truely a world-wide
contest, then perhaps 24 hours of operating and 24 hours of off time out of
the 48 hours would be the thing to do. That will do more to equalize the
effective operating time across the world and take away a timing advantage
from any selective points. Maybe this approach would have time off periods
of 8 hours minimum.

Anyway you do it, you must remember these points:

    1. A 160M contest is an opportunity for having two nights of fun and
making it a
one night contest is a "missed opportunity".

    2. Time off and time operated should allow all operators to plan their
operating strategy so that they can be on during the peak condition
night hours and be allowed to operate at both at their sun-rise and
sun-sets.

    3. All parts of the world should have an equivalent amount of quality
nightime operating hours with all other parts of the world.

    4. Don't make the point/distance calculation so complicated that you
aren't even sure if your computer can do it right.

    5. Make sure that a reasonable contest exchange is copied both ways.

    6. Make allowances for 'not-in-contest' QSOs to count, at least partically.

    7. Anything else I can't think of right now.

Thanks to all who answered on YU1NR..I have a street and PO address for him
plus his name.

I still have no clue on what to do with Ukraine stations that only list
their name or name/city on their logs. The Ukraine buro won't take im so I
guess I'll match up cities to good entries if possible. I have 4 logs going
back to 1991 that are still in limbo (can't send cert).

Hey all!

Can two antennas be turned with a single TIC
ring rotator? I envision mounting a 205CA in
the cradle and a 40-2CD 10' below the 205.
If you have done this, or knwo how to do it,
PLEASE respond via e-mail. 73 & thanx for

If this will be a multi-transmitter single band contest (MTSB) I hereby
reserve the first 25 kc's of the band, every kc. :) The first five kc's
will be available for rent. I figure that if the FCC can auction
spectrum, then so can I!

I think 24 hours is the minimum time period that should be considered for
an "International" contest on 160. Anything less would clearly be a
detriment to some part of the globe. A 48-hour period, with some lesser
amount of ON time, say 30 hours, would be more practical. Topband is not
like 40 or 20. I can see why Tree is agonizing over the time element. If
distance and 4-character grid squares are going to be the key elements
(which I think is great) then it seems to me that the time factor just sits
right down on top of the whole strategy equation. The time factor must be
equal for everyone around the world, and should include some flexibilty to
allow for personal "strategy" decisions. Wives? They are great .... and
powerful. But when did one of them ever "order up" a 160 opening?

This is true. I live about 5 miles from town and the designator is
different. The first 4 are correct, but the last two are off by more than
one. While this would not make a difference for the proposed contest in
my case, there could be several cases where hams live very close to the 4
digit line.

I was talking to W9XT about the ZIP code thing just last week. He stated
that he looked up the callsigns of several local hams on Buckmaster and
they had different 6 digit grids in a few cases. All one ZIP code.

Anyone know how Buckmaster arrives at this data?

My $0.02:

First, I think this should be thought more of as an "activity weekend"
rather than a contest. Activity begins at 12Z Saturday, runs for 24
hours, no mandatory offtime. This means Japan gets to bed at a decent
hour Sunday night.

If this were ever to become a real contest with DX participation, why
should we make RZ1OWA (or whatever they are called these days) turn
off the radio for eight hours when the band is open? They ain't gonna
be seeing a lot of daylight there the week after Christmas. Besides,
it's an activity weekend, not a non-activity weekend.

The activity must be a multiple of 24 hours, otherwise it is unbalanced
for the participants. If conditions happen to be bad during the 24
hour period, then it's bad luck. Single band contests have no business
being more than 24 hours long.

o Exchange is simply four letter grid designation, no RST, no anything else.
o No multipliers.
o QSO points based strictly on distance relative to grid centers.

All scoring will be computerized. Anyone who wants their score
published will provide their log in machine-readable form, preferably
via email. All other logs will be considered checklogs. The log
checking and scoring program will use its own database to compute
QSO points. The grid square you log will be ignored in calculation
of the official score.

o CW only. No SSB weekend.

Why torture ourselves with another SSB contest? Why antagonize the
pack with another SSB contest?

o No extra points for low power/QRP/etc or any of this drek.

Nor shall incentives or point multipliers be given for lame antennas,
lack of operating skill, satellite QSOs, copying the Field Day message,
or use of battery power. Nor shall there be top ten boxes for any of
this stuff either. Instead, the results will be published simply as
a long list of extensive line scores that include anything anyone can
think to suggest, such as:

OT6T AAnn 2417.3 1011 191 21.1 D g ++ 130 p 3 ON4UN,WN4KKN,DL1VJ other Flanders

This shows call, grid square, QSO points made, QSOs, number of grids worked --
sure, grid squares aren't part of the score, but the info is
intersting! -- hours of on-time, power level, best antenna, height of
antenna in feet, p or np for packet or no packet, number of operators,
operator list, other stuff, name of radio club.

The way you would decode the power is with a chart like this:

	A 2 watts or less
	B 20 watts or less
	C 200 watts or less
	D	2000 watts or less

To determine the best antenna, consult a chart like this:

	a	slinky dipole
	b	somewhat less lame antenna
	c	1/4 wave sloper
	d	inverted vee
	e	1/2 wave sloper
	f	shunt fed tower
	g	real 1/4 wave vertical
	h	2 1/4-wave verticals
	i	4 1/4-wave verticals
	-	no special RX antenna
	+	small loop for RX
	++	beverages for RX

The results will be published in sorted order on the basis of QSO
points, with no top ten boxes or club scores or any of that, in
electronic form. There will be no contest writeup. There will be
no records officially sanctioned by the sponsors. If we can talk a
magazine into publishing the results, they will appear in a half
page of mouseprint, like the CD Party results in QST.

Because the results will be in electronic form, everyone can download
them from the net and load them into Excel or Lotus 1-2-3 and sort
them in any fashion they wish. This means there will be a large
number (thousands) of top ten boxes, but they will all be "virtual"
top tens -- you have to compute them yourself! Maybe you will make
the top ten in the world in the 20 watt category. Maybe you will be
world high in the 200 watt slinky dipole category with packet
assistance. Maybe your club will make the highest score of any club
when dividing the sum of the QSOs points of the entries by the sum of
the heights of the antennas. Maybe you will be the highest score
station in grid area EMxx.

Printed results will be provided to all stations providing an SASE.
Logs must be received within three weeks of the activity. Results
will be published two weeks after the log deadline.

o No trophies.
o No certificates.
o No mugs.
o No plaques.

Since there will be over 1000 top ten boxes, it will be incumbent
upon the contest entrant to generate his own certificates and
trophies since this will cause an undue burden on the contest
sponsors. Third-party sponsorship of prizes is welcomed, but
the contest sponsor will have no specific affiliation with the
third party sponsors. Third party results summaries, contest
writeups (such as the nice writeups K5ZD makes in QST these days
for the Sweepstakes), analytical writeups, and so on are welcome,
but will have no specific affiliation with the contest sponsors
and will not be considered part of the "official" results.
