The secret at WB9Z on 160m.

   The wife went Christmas shopping. I ran to the shack and got 
on 160 meters to work a few. The problem was that it was 12pm 
local. I did hear many calling CQ Test and quite a few with loud 
signals for this time of day.(s9) I called many of them for 
quite some time but only one heard me. He was WB9Z. All the 
signals were from the 450-600 mile range and fairly equal in 
strength. I tried calling once,spacing out numerous calls to 
allow them to switch beverages,moving up and down in frequency 
but no luck. No wonder WB9Z kicks ass in the 160m contests.
 Three of the louder stations that did not hear me even enough 
to send a ..--.. were K8RR, N2RM and K3ANS. What is WB9Z using 
for receive antennas? BTW, running 100 watts and a half sloper

We had similar experiences. I called many and only about 1/5 of the
stations I called heard me.. I was extremly suprised when New Jesey came
back to me ( I am in Utah) . I have a Windom at 30 feet (Not even made for
160). I was running 100 watts.  Some of the stations that have great
receiving antennas and were able to hear this little pistol were.... K0FX,
NG7M, N3SL, N6NT, W0CP, K7FF, N7JW, N7EX, K2IGW, N6KI, KO7X, N6ZS, N6LL,
N2NT, N6YK, K8CC, K8DO, N6RO, K5NA, NZ7T,K7CA, KO5D, WF5E and unlike you
K8RR was able to hear me, but there were several who did not even flinch
when I called them.

Greeting All,
Just read a couple of posts regarding stations hearing (or NOT hearing) 
on 160 Meters.  Well, glad to know I'm not the only one who gets 
frustrated and wonders why.  I've had the same experiences over the 
several years I've worked the 160 Meter Contest.  I CAN NOT work the guys 
who are consistantly over S9, but if I call a weaker station, I can 
always get them the first or second try.  I even managed to call a few 
CQ's last night, and had stations right at the noise level call me ... 
worked them right away ... but call and call the loud ones, and they keep 
on CQ'ing like I'm not even there!  Still have no explaination for it!  
Guess I'll fire up on 160 now, and see if I can't struggle to put a few 
more "big guns" in my log, and look for the sure bet weaker sigs as well.

Aloha to All,

NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE HONOLULU
10 AM HST SAT DEC 7 1996 (Remember Pearl Harbor, 55 years ago
today).

STRONG NORTHERLY WINDS ARE NOW AFFECTING ALL 
ISLANDS. SCATTERED POWER OUTAGES AND FALLEN
TREES HAVE BEEN REPORTED ON OAHU. THE STRONG AND
GUSTY WINDS WILL CONTINUE THROUGHOUT THE DAY
AND INTO THIS EVENING. 

Well, had a good time for a couple of hours last evening in the
test,  but then the gales hit!

So down came my "tower",  ujsing the lowering motor
got it beolw the palm tree tops.  Unfortunately,  near
the tower top is the tie point for the center of my
160 inverted-vee dipole.  So when the winds went over
40 mph or so,  that was the end for me in the test.

Was very pleased to hear hundreds of signals on 160,
and all the way down to the bottom of the band.  I
stayed below 1825 pretty much,  as that was below
the keying transients that accompany KH6CC's
powerful signal from the Big Island about 350 miles
Southeast of my QTH on Kauai;  wonder how much
juice Jack gets from those big bottles he runs!

I made contacts with most of the Western states to
about as far as South Dakota in the midwest.  

Anyway was fun,  but brief.  Be interesting tonight,
IF the winds die away as they are forcast to do.  Was
a rather noisy night with the wind blowing so hard.

>From the mid-morning weather post,  sounds as if I'll
still be QRT on 160 this evening,  too bad as the band
had rather a low noise level out here last night.
