Maybe that is why they are only issuing 4 new vanity calls per day! I
was hoping it was because demand had tapered off, which would result
in Gate 1A opening soon...and Gate 2 soon after...

Let's just hope that your vanity call applications are not now
underwater. Parts of Gettysburg, PA, have received 11 inches of rain in
the past 24 hours and over 100 homes have been evacuated.

...And I just sent in for my license renewal last week!...

Excellant subject. I am discovering that high power solid state
amplifers have a "legal" problem in the states. One can't sell
them because they are wide band and cover - well above 27mhz.
I'm told with a hamcall sign I can MAIL ORDER one -kit(but can't use
US mail?) that is high power and fits the traveling bill.
Those that do sell them over counter, etc. have devices to limit the
upper freq. ?

There are at least three real, legit QRO mobile amps I'm aware of -
one is the Metron MA-1000B (possibly out of production), another is
the ten-tec product, and another is made by mfj/ameritron.

None of them cover 10M but modification is not difficult.

Most require 50 watts drive, and will do 500-600W out on 160-15meters.

All require "hard wired" PTT switching. The ten-tec might do QSK - the
metron definately is not QSK.

In any event I'd suggest extensive testing to ensure damage to the
car electrical/computer system is not damaged due to the strong RF fields.

Also consider a secondary battery close to the amplifier to handle
current peaks.

Steve, I'm sure glad you had a good response. For every good experience
though, there is a bad one. Maybe ICOM East responds better than ICOM West.
My little 2 mtr IC27H has been at ICOM West for over a month and "on the
bench" for close to two weeks now. All it needs is a new volume
control/on-off switch. Boy have I been given the run around when I call.
They must spend all their time on high priority contest radio repairs.

Sorry for the non constructive, non contest drivel. It won't happen again.
