Subject: Vic's "phone" contact
Message-ID: <m0uWnRn-000f4ZC at mgate.arrl.org>
Yep, Jack,
I've heard that story about Vic's "phone" contact.
Vic was an early user of a CQ machine for contests. His was a large
disc driven by a 1-rpm clock motor, with dots and dashes (technically known
as dits and dats) cut into the edge of the disc and a microswitch rolling
along the edge of the disc to key the rig.
Late one Saturday night (early one Sunday morning) of a Sweepstakes
contest, Vic turned on the CQ SS machine and went into the adjacent bathroom
to splash water on his face and get himself more alert. After he did that,
he became alert enough to realize he had other business to do. By the time
he finished his other task, he was alert enough to realize that the CQ
machine was STILL running!
He dashed back to the rig, signed "K," and stood by to hear what he
described as a pileup of "several hundred WB2s all calling" him. [WB2 at
that time was one of the latest prefixes.]
Hey, Colson, good to hear from you! Is my memory correct---wasn't that
microphonic VFO QSO the only HF "phone" contact Vic ever made?
I'm not on the reflector, but ole Glenn is posting this for me. Tnx,
Glenn.

>>>50 lbs. per sq. ft. wind gust
My calcs show this as at the top of a 110 ft tower in a 110 MPH wind
district WOW! You must either live in Alaska, off the coast of NC, on in
Miami!
Here in the upper midwest I figure 25 lbs. per sq. ft. wind gust for an 80
foot tower in an 80 MPH wind district.
Guess I didn't know how lucky I was!

out I thought I'd make this announcement here: My new "vanity"
callsign has been processed. My new (old) callsign is N5KM.

Even heard East Coast guys with my R7. SO, pass the word to all the 10
meter/Novice Field Day ops to check 10, especially after dark, for good
openings.

Message-ID: <960620232323_101332.232_GHW65-1 at CompuServe.COM>
A reminder that this weekend is the RSGB Summer topband contest,
a short 3-hour CW event 2100-0000z 22nd June. Overseas stations work
UK stations and score 3 points per QSO and a bonus of 5 points for
the first QSO with each UK county code. Send RST and serial number,
UK stations also send county code. Overseas logs to G3UFY or you
can email to me 101332.232 at compuserve.com
Sadly it has been decided that this year will be the last time this contest
will be run. I was not at the meeting when the decision was made and
for the record, I am not in agreement.
