the current sf and a values are on http://www.sel.noaa.gov/forecast.html
the current k index along with plots of xray flux and geomagnetic
field activity are at http://www.sel.noaa.gov/today.html
remember sf and the a index are only updated once a day at 21z, the
boulder k index is updated every 3 hours, so don't go looking for
minute by minute updates. the xray flux and geomagnetic field plots
from satellite measurements are updated every couple minutes.

Subject: SS CW Scores over 1000 QSOs

Sweepstakes is a more than a contest -- its a tradition! On CW, making =
over 1000 QSOs is considered a significant accomplishment. For some =
strange reason, I started keeping records of every OPERATOR who has =
broken the 1K contact barrier since 1976. (This may be my last year =
since it is very difficult to keep up with the call sign changes which =
is why I only go back to 1976!)
Below is a list of those who have done it the most times in the past 10 =
years. The second column lists the current streak that operator has =
going for breaking 1K in a row.
If you would like the full list, it is stored in Microsoft Excel format. =
I will be happy to e-mail it to you.
Look for the Phone list of operators over 1500 QSOs in a few weeks.
Good luck to everyone in this year's Sweepstakes. I will again be doing =
the write-up in QST. Please post your comments after the contest to the =
3830 reflector so I can perhaps use them in the write-up.

Subject: How to do Multi-Single in CW SS

I have been asked to guest op. M/S style for the upcoming CW SS at a modest station with a tribander and wires.
The last time I was involved in a Multi-Single for Sweepstakes was at W0AA in the early seventies before they outlawed the "Octopus". One guy would stomp on the foot switch, disabling all the other guys transmitters, (maybe in the middle of a QSO) and hold it until he was finished. This soon developed into guys standing on the foot switch even when just CQing, which led to loud arguing, fist fights etc. etc.
Watching the WRTC guys go at it at the Motel 6 was an education. Stories told around the pool afterwards were even more enlightenment.
The only reason to set up a second radio in SS is to listen for multipliers needed on another band which is open, or QSOs still needed on Sunday afternoon. Since we are at the bottom of the sunspot cycle, only two bands will be open at the same time, so only a few antennas are needed.
BAND ANT
15m and 20m / Tribander and temporary wires for listening
20m and 40m / Tribander plus shorty 40
40m and 80m / shorty 40 plus wires
(no 160m antenna at this station)
Here are some thoughts on maximizing the advantage with these antennas, two operators, two radios (assuming a modern radios and one amp) and no octopus.
The 40m spotting op. finds an needed one, tells the 80m running op. "Hey, I found North Dakota on 7053."
The running op. replies "OK, gimme the 40m antenna", presses A=B, punches in "7035 ENTER" on the computer. (hopefully on the first try).
Meanwhile the spotting op. throws the antenna switch and moves the BAND SWITCH, TUNE and LOAD dials on the amplifier. (Hopefully without error).
The running op. asks "Ready on 40m?", the spotting op. answers "Ready on 40m".
The running op. works the North Dakota station, then yells "Going back to 80m" and switches back to the B VFO
Meanwhile the spotting op. switches the antennas back and resets the BAND SWITCH, TUNE and LOAD on the amp. (Hopefully again without error).
Finally, the running op continues to CQ. With luck nothing blows up.
Seems pretty hectic, doesn't it? The better WRTC teams did stuff like this, but didn't have to worry about an amp. There must be a better way.
OK here is the question. Would it be better to have two amps and two antenna switches, or a automatic tuneup amp, or better yet to forget about trying to team up on the rapid band changes?
Bonus question. Better to seek professional help? :)

I was informed yesterday (21st of October) by the TK1A-Contest-Team.
TK1A (Corsica) will be qrv this year instead of TK2C in the
CQWWDX SSB Contest.
The former TK1A-Team (members of the Corse DX-Gang and the
Bavarian Contest Club) is taking part in the Multi/Multi-class.
The TK1A-Team is using the "TK1-Prefix" for the first time on
shortwave.

Will, AA4NC, told me personally that he ain't changing his call. Why
would he, he is in North Carolina and his call is AA4North Carolina. I
also live in North Carolina and know Will personally. Where did you hear
this rumor? And why if he is changing (which he's not) his call would he
get his call first?
