In reviewing my Sept 96 CW Sprint log I have found another issue with
ethical implications. I loaded my log into Microsoft Excel and peformed a
sort by callsign. This listing has several advantages, first it allows you
to easily see which stations were worked on only one band, which were worked
on two bands, and which stations were worked on all three. It also allows
you to double check to see if the names,states, and numbers (i.e. causality)
match up on the 2 band and 3 band qsos. Finally, it allows you to look for
busted calls. In the process of doing this, I found what appears to be an
obviously busted call - name and state match, but callsigns differ by one
symbol of one morse character. A quick check of the UALR callsign server
seems to rule out the possibility of this being a coincidence - i.e. two
guys with the same name and state, and very similar calls. Would it be
considered unethical for me make the correction before submitting my log? Or
would it be more appropriate of me to not claim the qso, thus avoiding the
busted call penalty, and at the same time preserving the real time integrity
of the log?

Excellent question, Mike. A "purist" would say that you use what what
was copied. However - all the big stations "massage" the log to
eliminate
busted calls, etc. Who is right? Depends on how important a big score is

You can't delete the call because it will be NIL for the guy you
worked.  Your choices are to fix the call and not tell anyone, or
leave it alone and receive a busted call penalty (I will find it), 
or to put zero QSO points and a note in the log, which will save 
you the busted call penalty.

The moral high ground is to leave your log alone after the contest.
That is what I have had to do now that I have developed fairly 
sophisticated tools for analyzing logs.  However, back in the "old"
days, people didn't think much of going over a hand written log and
making it more legible.  In the process they might find some "bonehead" 
errors and fixing them.  That often happens when an strange callsign
would appear and you got it wrong the first time you worked it and
corrected it after working it on other bands.  

This acutally happend to me and Trey during the WRTC.  I worked VY1RAC,
but the first time I worked them, they signed the call VY1JA.  I
think I know who the operator was (reminds me of sending the wrong 
check for the first hour in an SS once).  We made a note and during
the 10 minutes after the contest allowed for cleaning up the log,
we fixed the call.  

Probably looking over your log, noting the strange call and fixing 
it would be in the light gray area.  Using a database of some kind
to find uniques and similar calls/exchanges is in the middle of that 
area, and using an outside source for information to make a 
decision after the contest is over puts you in a darker area still.

As I write this, I don't even know what your call is.  If you were
a top contender, I would really suggest you take the high ground
and just leave your log alone and send it in.  If you are in the
under 250 QSO level of competition, you really need to ask yourself
what you feel right doing.  If you change the call to the correct
one, you are the only person who will know that has been done and
you are the one who will have to live with the decision.  It is 
much like the decision to run legal or illegal power.  Most people
won't know about it, but how will you fell about your effort when
you see the results in the magazine?

Oh, and if you are WX3N, please leave the call in taking full credit
for it.

Subject: FCC Vanity new calls available

I read on either the contest or DX reflector that the FCC had just made 
available 347 (?) 1x2 callsigns.  Anyone know what those calls are?  Also 
is there a place on WWW that shows what calls (current) are available?
