[CQ-Contest] Query: How to do an effective noise survey?

Ok gang, advice time again:

I've searched both the cq-contest and the top-band archives
for subjects containing 'noise'.  I found a lot of stuff
on diagnosis and correction of line noise problems.  Not 
much on how to avoid dumb real estate aquisitions.

So... what is the best way to go about doing a noise
survey on a prospective piece of property?
