At 5 miles he should be no problem at all, assuming
quality equipment at both stations.  I live within 2-7 
miles crow-distance of N0AT, K0TO, W0BV, K0XK, 
W0HW, and K0SF.  These stations are all capable
of LOUD, but can operate within 5KHz of any of them.
