The Indonesian logging companies -- the same outfits that caused many of
the fires that polluted much of Southeast Asia a couple of years ago --
cause tremendous RF pollution to the lower 35 KHz of 40 meters within
Southeast Asia. This is something that I have to reckon with during my
annual visits to Thailand where I operate as HS0ZAR. Paradoxically, they
don't generally operate above 7035 because they realize there are hams up
there since in Asia SSB activity begins about 7035 KHz and up. They
operate on the CW end because they don't perceive of interfering with
anyone they can't copy -- though I have had them whistle loudly on my CW
frequency on occasion. Why are they in the 40 meter ham band? Because
ham-band-only transceivers are the cheapest HF SSB rigs that can be
obtained by their communications contractors.
At the IARU Region III Conference in 1997 the Indonesian delegates
apologized profusely for this problem and asked the others in attendance to
e-mail them (the national society is ORARI -- see the IARU.ORG Web Site)
when interference was observed in order to build up a file to show their
authorities. The implication was that the companies are too politically
powerful for the hams in Indonesia to take them on by themselves. How
recent turmoil in that country affects all of this is not known, but the
QRM seems to be continuing at about the same level.

Dave's points are well taken. 7005 is indeed about the best frequency on
the whole. For the USA boys calling me when I'm at HS0ZAR, it's not the
other guys in the pile-up back here that are keeping me from hearing you,
it's the Indonesian commercial QRM. Don't be "helpful" by sending "up" to
your fellow pile-uppers on frequency. I can only copy you on or very near
my transmit frequency, so call me there. I try to put the call of the
station I am working on the END of my transmission so that it will stick
out there after the last of the long callers has finished calling.

Contest Friends,

If you are in the area (or even from California) I would highly recommend
this event to anyone who hasn't been to one yet!

I still have very fond memories of the fine hospitality of the Contest Club
Finland, and all the new friends I made that weekend. I hope I can attend
some of these meetings in the future.

I regret that I will not be able to go this year, but it is well worth the
effort to attend if you are in the area, and can get away for the weekend.

Ho Ho Ho,

Kenny K2KW/6
