Jay is 100% correct.
A switch as he describes, commonly called a "transfer switch", will prevent
injury and also prevent damage to the generator by preventing the
possibility of it's output ever coming in contact with the commercial mains.
There could be significant fireworks!
Many companies offer an "automatic transfer switch" that, during a power
outage, will start the generator, actuate the transfer switch and connect
your load to the generator without any interaction.
K1VUT's elegant solution is also a very safe way around this problem. In
this case, I would suggest using outlets that are a different color to
indicate that they are fed by the generator. Several colors are available.
