 Mike et al:

Couple of points that have been brought up regarding generators
should be elaborated on by someone who has the technical strength
 to do so:

 1. Generator Noise: (Audible noise in particular). The generator
manufacturers are aware of noise being a problem with their products.
Please note though that all the audible noise coming from a Generator
is NOT just exhause noise. Mechanical vibration, and noise generated
by rotating/moving devices within the generator are a VERY BIG
contributor too audible noise. I know that Generac is working
diligently on reducing audible noise.....to a large extent because
their products are often used by RV owners, and RV owners stay in
campgrounds or KOA type facilities. Noisy generators disturb others
considerably. Work is being done on this, and the improvement will
 be substantial.

That aside, a GOOD muffler is still very important, and the small
single-baffle "thingys" that are about the size of a doubled up fist
just don't cut the mustard very well.

 2. Please also accept that just any old generator and any old UPS
will NOT automatically work together. Sometimes NEVER, sometimes
POORLY, and sometimes okay. Be really cautious on this one. Some
UPS's require very tight specs on frequency of the input generator
line voltage (Controlled Ferro UPS's MUST have a very tight freq.
to operate at all--such as plus/minus 2 hz or so). The cheap UPS's
that are available at your local discount store, or computer store,
which do not have transformers in them, may/may-not work with a
 generator.

Just a word of caution !!
