Another great day at the old PO box. The latest QST arrived along with
complimentary copy of the Feb. Worldradio.
Front cover photo of a laptop and the network analyzer featured in an
article inside.
Contest related items: Product Reviews - Patcomm PC-16000 HF rig (is the
Kachina next!?), Command Technologies Commander VHF 1200 6-meter amp, and
K6STI's RITTY 2.0 software; Correspondence - The Value of Contesting
(letter); Supercomputers in Your Shack - Build, Don't Buy; Hints & Kinks
- make antenna center insulators from PVC pipe caps; and Results - 97
IARU HF World Championship.
Interesting items: WRC-97; Build Your Own Network Analyzer - Part 2; A
Simple CW Transmitter for 80/40 Meters (construction project); An
Internet Ham Radio Receiver (now everyone with a PC can have a second
receiver, only VHF/UHF now, but just think of the possibilities.... How
about one in every major ham country of the world, then you could listen
to see if your RF signal and propagation is making it.); Build Your Own
Code Keys!; Technical Correspondence - lightning strikes; and The World
Above 50 MHz - the necessity of CW (whoa!, I thought these were the ones
that wanted to get rid of CW!); and more ....
Ads: Finally, there is a full page ad for the new Yaesu FT-846 HF-430MHz
rig. And only a small picture of the new Icom IC-746 HF-144MHz (now, is
this a souped-up IC706 or a souped-down IC756?) in the HRO ad. The
Kachina PC rig ad has now spread to 1 & 1/3 pages (anyone using one yet?
where is a review?). Olam Machinery has an ad for a one man set-up
non-conductive portable mast (no indication of heights, however, the
picture looks like around 30 feet).
73 and good reading,
Henry Pollock - K4TMC (ex WB4HFL)
Raleigh, NC (where "Trees are not for wire antennnas only!")
