[CQ-Contest] Low Cost DVK alternatives

K1KP detailed a mod of a Radio Shack product (now discontinued) for a
single memory DVK.  The 2000 ARRL Handbook has a circuit similar to this
using a (now discontinued) Radio Shack part (276-1326).
The current Radio Shack catalog has a $9.99 part (273-1323) which appears
similar.  However, where the previous RS items had separate speaker/mike
terminals, this unit has a speaker which doubles as the mike.  Does
anyone have experience in modifying the current unit to use as a cheap DVK?

Also, Ramsey Electronics advertises a "Chatterbox" DVK which has 4 memories,
apparently the same technology ISD chip, ro $75 including case, and
advertises that it is complete with computer interface.  Does anyone
have experience with this particular item (a kit)?
