In the past I've always sent "QRL? QRL? QRL? K4BEV", even during contests.
Now that I've been enlightened I'll send "? K4BEV" (fast) and if no response 
in a few seconds I'll do the QRL? bit. Will that work?
I do listen for a while (on 2 or 3 different antennas) before I ask (and to 
check out signals either side of me) BTW.
