On a crowded band, someone else will almost always claim the frequency in far
less than that.  Likewise, if you spend more than a few seconds listening for a
fill from a weak station on your run frequency, you'll hear someone trying to
move in.  That's why I prefer the ?, followed by "test mycall".  It gives me a
decent chance of claiming the frequency if it's (sort of) clear, but if someone
is in a QSO I won't mess it up too badly.  Likewise, I'm willing to tolerate
someone doing the same thing to me.  (As long as they go away when it becomes
clear I'm in a QSO.)
